Zelda Nessen Hess

July 21, 1905 — November 28, 2002

Howell ? Zelda Nessen Hess, 97, of Howell, died on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2002 at The Bear River Valley Care Center, in Tremonton. She was born on July 21, 1905 in Newton, Utah the daughter of Nephi and Barbara Wildman Nessen. She married Orland Hess on September 14, 1931 in Salt Lake City and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Orland died exactly two years ago on Thanksgiving Day. Zelda left Newton at age five to begin a new life in Howell with her parents. She was the first child of Nephi and Barbara Nessen. The family eventually included six daughters and five sons. Growing up in Howell was an everyday adventure. The girls helped with the house chores and the boys helped run the farm. Many times Zelda was allowed to help in the fields, which she enjoyed more than scrubbing the floors. Summer was a time to gather in the crops, put up fruit, make butter, and smoke meat for winter. Even the smallest child had a chore to complete. To Zelda, the family was everything. Howell Valley represented her home, family, and dear friends. Zelda was assistant postmistress in Howell for 30 years, and acting postmistress for six months. She was the secretary of the Relief Society for seven years, teacher in the Relief Society and Primary, and a vistiting teacher. Zelda is survived by her sons - Terry O. Hess and Jack Ann Taylor; one brother ? James Nessen; one sister ? Jennie Phillips; seven grandchildern, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 69 years. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Howell LDS Church, 16035 North 17400 West. Friends may call prior to services from 11:30 ? 12:40 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Howell Cemetery. The family wishes to express their thanks to the Howell LDS ward and the staff at the Bear River Valley Care Center for their special care in her last months. Grandma you have no more meals to fix, dishes to wash, or clothing to hang out on the line. You have lived a full life, now rest.
