Winnie May Barnes Olney Holland

June 12, 1911 — July 15, 2007

Winnie May Barnes Olney Holland, 96, passed away peacefully, her daughters by her side, on July 15, 2007 at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center, Logan, Utah. Winnie was born in Smithfield, Utah to Henry and Nellie Lemon Barnes on June 12, 1911. Raised on a farm, she grew up riding horses, working in the fields and watching over her seven younger brothers and sisters. She married Mack Olney on July 30, 1930. They lived in Smithfield and raised three children, Robert, Maxine and Linda. Winnie lost her favorite dance partner when Mack was killed in an accident on September 18, 1956. She had a nine year old daughter to raise, so she began working at the Logan Regional Hospital. After attending classes in Salt Lake City, she became the Executive Housekeeper at the hospital, which she enjoyed for many years. She met Vernal T. Holland and they were married on March 6, 1971. They resided in River Heights and then moved to Smithfield in October of 1989. Vernal passed away on January 4, 1993. In October of 2005, Winnie moved to the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center in Logan, where she will be remembered as the ?little lady who loved to dance?. She has been a devoted member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints throughout her life, and had a strong testimony of the gospel. Winnie is survived by her daughters: Maxine Kendall Corbridge, Smithfield, Ut; Linda Ace Johnson, Smithfield, Ut; daughter-in-law, Reta Roland, Sun City, Az; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters: Anna Mather, Logan, Ut; Afton Carlson, South Gate, Ca; Jean Yorba, Anaheim, Ca; and a brother, Jack Barnes, Ogden, Ut. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Mack Olney and Vernal Holland; a son, Robert Olney; an infant great granddaughter; sisters: Lucile Holt, Gwen Lindeman; and a brother, Boyd Barnes. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2007 in the Smithfield 3rd Ward Chapel, 640 North 200 East, Smithfield with Bishop Craig Warren conducting. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . Winnie?s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have learned much through her example of hard work, courage, patience, and perseverance. She has entertained her family with stories and her great sense of humor. We will miss you Mom! The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at Terrace Grove Assisted Living and Rocky Mountain Hospice for loving care and support. Many thanks to mother?s special friend, Margaret Sorenson.
