Warren Eugene Hansen Sr.

May 29, 1905 — December 4, 2002

Warren Eugene Hansen East Garland/Logan: Warren Eugene Hansen Sr died December 4, 2002 at Logan Rehabilitation Center, Logan, UT. He was born May 29, 1905 in Brigham City, Box Elder County, UT, the eldest child of Eugene S. and Birdie Hansen. He graduated from Bear River High School, where he was student body president, an honor student and active in sports and music. He attended Utah State Agricultural College now Utah State University briefly before returning to East Garland to manage the family farm. He was called to the Central States Mission at age 17 where among other notable experiences, he and his companion, Leroy Kimball, discovered the Johnson Farmhouse where the Prophet Joseph Smith received revelations that are now part of the Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Steed on August 19, 1925 in the Salt Lake Temple. Warren and Ruth were the parents of eight children: Elder W. Eugene Jeanine, Salt Lake City; Zola-deceased as a baby; Sherma Walter-deceased Fridal, Tremonton, UT; D Walter Niki, Reno, NV; Laralee, Honeyville, UT; Lynda, Grants, NM; Carl Lauralee, East Garland, UT, and Conly Joyce, N Logan, UT. Other surviving relatives include his brother Wendell Nelva, Salt Lake City. His sister Ora and a baby sister, Laura Marie preceded him in death. Warren has 27 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Warren and Ruth emphasized Christlike living, education, and hard, productive work in their home. Farm work was a good schoolmaster. The children applied the principles learned there, to life and all finished college and went on to successful careers. Five of the seven living children earned advanced degrees with four holding the equivalent of the doctoral degree. It was a wonderful opportunity to grow up in a home that was filled with children, love, worthwhile activity, and encouragement. The gospel of Jesus Christ was taught by precept and example and charity was espoused as greater than honors of men. Dad was known to make important business transactions with a handshake that was considered by those who knew him to be as strong as any written contract. He attended the temple frequently throughout his life. His family are thankful to be raised in such a home as he and Ruth presided over. His last advice to his living posterity was that a testimony of the gospel was a priceless possession and counseled them to follow the direction of the general authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. Warren served in many positions in the community and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He was Bishop of the East Garland Ward and a stake High Councilor for 17 years. He served on the Box Elder County School Board for 12 years as member and President. He was Chairman of the Republican Party and member of the Board of Health in Box Elder County. Warren and Ruth were inducted into USU?s Old Main Society in 1991. He was a progressive farmer in Box Elder County and Southern Idaho for more than 70 years and was awarded Honorary American Farmer by the Future Farmers of America Organization. After Ruth died April 8, 1997, he retired from farming at the age of 92. He moved to the Williamsburg Retirement Center in Logan where he met and married Nellie Wadsworth on May 16, 2001 when both were 96 years old. No Salt Lake Temple record could be found for a marriage of both partners as old as 96 and it was also the only known time a Salt Lake Temple president Pres. W. Eugene Hansen had performed his own father?s wedding. He will be missed by many. He had many friends. The family expresses appreciation to the staff and residents at Williamsburg and Logan Rehabilitation Center and particularly to one special person, Nellie who helped make the last years of his life so fulfilling and pleasant.
