College Ward, Utah ? Bob Lewelling, 59, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah from complications due to pneumonia. He was born May 16, 1942 to Henry and Fay Jordan Lewelling in Dallas, Texas. He met his wife, Jackie Leeks, in Cache Valley at her first Mountain Man Rendezvous in 1980. Together for 20 years, they married in Las Vegas on September 30, 2000 at the Special Forces Reunion. President Kennedy once said that The Green Beret would stand ? as a symbol of excellence, a mark of distinction, and a badge of courage?? Walter Robert Lewelling, Master Sergeant retired was the proud recipient of the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He graduated from Special Forces training at Ft. Bragg, NC, about 1961 and was active in the military for 21 years, which included three tours of duty in Viet Nam, two as an A-Team medic and one in Project Omega MAC V ? SOG, also one tour in Laos. He knew three different languages, including Vietnamese and Laotian. He was a Professor of Military Science for USU?s ROTC. Jumping out of planes and helicopters with a hundred pound rucksack strapped to your back, day in and day out puts stress on a body that did not show up for years. Bob had to take an early retirement due to this and also give up activities that he loved dearly such as fishing, hunting, camping, mountain climbing, running and skiing. He was a Mountain Man. Everyone knew ?Limp Stick? Lewelling. He received his Bachelor?s degree in American Studies and a Master?s in Anthropology from USU. He was a Park Ranger at Capital Reef National Park for a brief time. Bob was an active member of the NRA. He taught ?Concealed Carry? and ?Firearm Safety? classes. He is survived by his wife, Jackie; his mother, Fay Lewelling of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Mary Don Counts; his daughter, Jennifer Tim Ferris and their son Jake of Denton, Texas. He is also survived by his daughters Brandi Troy Kresie of Logan and Kori Hill of Reno, Nevada and grandchildren, Nicki, Michael, Mariah, Dakota and Arianna. And last but not least his ?special? daughter, Andrea John Shirts and their children Mitchell and Bailey. Funeral services will be held at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Friends and family may call on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday one hour prior to services.
