WALTER HAWLEY FUNKE Walter Hawley Funke died at Logan Nursing Home on Sunday August 18, 2013 Hawley was born June 18, 1919 on Manhattan in New York City and grew up in Scarsdale, NY, son of Adelaide and Walter Funke. Hawley attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a sports scholarship and graduated in 1942 with a BS in Business. A lifetime athlete, he played baseball, football and was on the UNC swim team. Uncle Sam had allowed him to complete his studies, so later that same year he enlisted in the US Army during World War II, being assigned Versailles, France with General Eisenhower's Headquarters. He then stayed under Eisenhower's command in Frankfurt, Germany where he was part of the USFET and occupational forces. After an Honorable Discharge, Hawley returned home where he graduated from Columbia University with a Masters in Business Administration. He met and married Olive Lorraine Quinn and in 1954 they became the parents of one daughter, Sherry Marie. Hawley joined Celanese Corporation now Hoechst Celanese and in 1958 was transferred to Charlotte, NC where he worked for them for the next 25 years, until retirement. He volunteered many hours for the Lions Club and Boy Scouts and campaigned tirelessly for the Republican Party. Hawley and Lorraine built their dream home on Lake Norman, NC where they continued to swim and boat for 23 more years. Hawley loved to tinker in his workshop and spend time sailing, a passion of the Funke family. He and Lorraine traveled and cruised extensively all over the world- visiting 6 of the 7 world continents. Hawley and Lorraine moved to Logan, UT, in 2010 to live closer to their daughter, Sherry and her family. Hawley is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine, daughter Sherry Jim Dorward of Logan, grandchildren Benjamin Dorward of Austin, Texas, Heidi Dorward of Logan, his brother, Arthur, of N.
