Vernal Richard Krebs, 87, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully from this life on April 23, 2009. Vern was born March 20, 1922, in North Logan, Utah to John and Martha Berger Krebs. He married Marie Walker on September 3, 1947 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Marie passed away on May 25, 1999.
Vern and Marie have eight children: Lanny Sandy Krebs, Springville, Utah; Kathie Don Holyoak, Moab, Utah; Steve Pat Krebs, Nibley, Utah; Nolan Teresa Krebs, North Logan, Utah; Dallin Kimberly Krebs, Mapleton, Utah; Corey Janae Krebs, Mapleton, Utah; Shelley Courtney Balls, Hyde Park, Utah; Jody Liz Krebs, Lewiston, Utah; 37 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 sisters and 2 brothers; Ruth Robinson, Irene Murray, Leo Krebs, and Floyd Krebs all of North Logan, and Marie Patterson of Salt Lake City. A sister, Emma Anderson, and a brother, John Philip Krebs preceded him in death.
Vern graduated from South Cache High School. While in High School, he along with his brother, Leo Krebs, and Na Ray Ormond, were members of the National FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Team. They won the state Dairy Cattle Judging contest and earned the right to represent Utah at the national meet in Kansas City, where they won the national title. After graduating, he attended Utah State University until World War II broke out. He served in the 163rd Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division in Borneo, Sulu Archipelago, Mindanao Island, and the Philippine Invasion Campaign. He was a decorated war veteran with medals including the Combat Infantryman badge and the Bronze Star. In 1953 he became a distributor technician for Curtiss Candy Co. Breeding Service. He was the president of the Cache County Holstein Fresian Association and a delegate to the national convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He and 5 other dairymen started one of the first Grade-A dairy co-ops. He also drove school bus for over 30 years for the Cache County School District.
Vern loved horses his entire life and it was not uncommon to see him driving a team of horses in local parades and on the streets of North Logan. He served in many church callings and was an active member his entire life. He was devoted to service of all types, including North Logan City Council. He has made lasting friendships with people of all ages throughout the world. He had a very magnetic personality and people were drawn to him. He loved being outdoors with family and friends whether camping, hunting or fishing, or packing horses into the Windrivers or Uintas. He loved writing and sharing his poetry with others and could recite every one of his poems from memory. His memory was very sharp, even until the very moment he passed away. He was a wealth of knowledge and we have all learned so many things from him. We will all miss his warm smiles and great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie Walker Krebs; 3 grandchildren, Clint Holyoak, Jesse Krebs, and Joshua Krebs.
