Smithfield ? Verla Mae Stirland Noble, 91, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. She was born in Providence on May 5, 1913 to Richard and Lillie Stirland. She was raised in Providence, attending the local schools and graduating from South Cache High School. After an introduction by a friend and a two year courtship, she married Edwin H. Noble on June 26, 1935 in the Logan LDS Temple. They made their home on a dairy farm in Smithfield, where they spent the next 50 years together, until Edwin?s death in 1985. Together they raised one son, Richard , who was killed in the Vietnam War. She became an active member of the Gold Star Mothers. Verla enjoyed interior decorating and making floral arrangements. She loved to entertain and had a way of making everyone feel welcome and at home. Youth she had taught over the years, along with many Utah State University students, loved to visit ?Grandma Verla.? She will be deeply missed, but remain dearly loved. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many capacities over the years. She was currently serving in the Branch Relief Society Presidency. Her testimony and love for the gospel was shared with the many young people, who came to visit her often. Verla is survived by a sister, Lucie Wilson, Layton; sister-in-law, Ranae Karren, Smithfield; one nephew, Michael S. Judith Wilson, Layton; and a niece, Patricia John Fewkes, Layton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin; son, Richard Edwin; brother, Oral Stirland and brother-in-law, Donald L. Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan. Friends and family may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services.
