Verda Marie Jenson Heggie passed away on February 25, 2006, peacefully at her daughter?s home in Providence, Utah.
She was born on November 20, 1916, in Smithfield, Utah, the sixth child and third daughter of Charles and Nellie Monson Jenson. She married John L. Heggie on January 23, 1947, in the Logan Temple. They were married 55 years.
Verda graduated from North Cache High School and LDS Business College. She was employed for many years at the Logan Garment Company. In July 1940, she left for a mission to the New England States, an event she treasured throughout her life. Upon returning to Cache Valley, she found employment with the Lundstrom Furniture Company as secretary.
Verda was very involved in both her church and community activities. She served as secretary in the ward and stake Sunday School organization. She also served as a stake M.I.A. Activity Leader. In her ward Relief Society, she served as a counselor and later as president. Teaching Gospel Doctrine was especially rewarding for her. She also enjoyed working in the Young Women program.
In the community, she was quite active in the DUP, Martin Harris Days, and of course participated in the Martin Harris Pageant with her husband for many seasons. She also was involved in the Farm Bureau Women?s organization, as well helping with the local PTA. She and John supported the Church Indian Placement Program and had the privilege of welcoming Juanita Jackson, a 4th grader, into their home, as well as JoAnn Bitsilly, a 5th grader, a few years later.
From January 1980 through July 1981, she and her husband served an LDS mission together in the Philippines, another marvelous experience she treasured. Upon their return, they served as officiators in the Logan Temple for five years. More than anything, Verda enjoyed being a devoted wife and mother, and supporting her husband in his various church assignments.
In the fall of 1999, she and her husband moved to Providence, Utah, to be near their daughter.
Verda was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Tom Winings, of Providence, Utah, and four grandchildren: Emily Warren Spencer, Milwaukee, WI; John H. Winings, Provo, Utah, James R. Winings Monterrey Mexico West Mission; Jared A. Winings, Providence, Utah; and two great grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Spencer.
Verda was a kind, loving person, and one who had a rich sense of humor. She spent much time playing with her grandchildren and once rolled an old tire down a slope past them while they were playing nearby. When they looked around in wonderment, they saw Grandma Heggie at the top of the slope having a hearty laugh. For her grandchildren, love was spelled T-I-M-E.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to extend thanks and appreciation to the Hospice people who were so kind in giving her care during her last days. We especially wish to extend our thanks and love to Charlotte Ringer for the wonderful care she provided Verda over the past three years. To all who have extended their love and sympathy to the family during this time, we give our thanks and appreciation.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 4 at the Clarkston LDS Ward Chapel, 25 East 100 South. The viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Relief Society room prior to the service. Interment will be in the Clarkston Cemetery.
