Thomas "Tom" Matney, 57, died at his home in Eugene, Oregon on October 24, 2008 of natural causes.
Tom was born on March 28, 1951 to Tom and Shirley Matney in Tremonton, Utah. At age 14 he moved with his family to Soda Springs, Idaho and graduated from Soda Springs High School in 1969. Tom attended Idaho State University before enlisting in the US Army from 1970 to 1973. He received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts from Boise State University before and a Masters in Education from Utah State University in 1981.
On August 13, 1977 Tom married the former Carol Bingham in Soda Springs, Idaho. They were blessed with two sons: Tom, born in 1987, and Aaron, born in 1991. They lived in Lewiston, Idaho where Tom served as Director of Educational Technology and taught photography at Lewis-Clark State College. In the Spring of 1999, Tom was hired by the University of Oregon in Eugene as Director of Media Services where he worked until 2007.
Tom's gift was his ability to make anyone feel comfortable, happy and welcomed. He was a devoted father and husband. He loved coaching dozens of youth sports teams. His continued love for his entire family of sisters, nephews and nieces and his mother was unquestioned. He enjoyed his many friends, golf, photography, being an avid Oregon Duck fan, and spending time on the Oregon coast with his family.
He is dearly loved and missed by his friends and family; his mother Shirley Matney of Maple Plain, MN; his sisters Julie Weitz in Sheridan, WY; Susanne Shuler in Minneapolis, MN; and Marianne Matney in Lake Jackson, Texas.
A memorial service will be on November 4, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Eugene, Oregon. There will be public visitation hours from 6 to 7 pm on Friday, October 31, at Rogers and Taylor. The funeral service is November 1, 2008 at Aldersgate United Method Church in Brigham City, Utah at 11 am. His final resting place is at the Riverview Cemetery in Tremonton, Utah.
