Susan Somers Speth

November 14, 1950 — September 24, 2009

On 24th September 2009 after a short but very courageous battle with cancer at the age of 58, Susan Somers Speth slipped peacefully away surrounded by her family and friends to returned to the loving embrace of her loving Father in Heaven. Susan was born on 14th November 1950 in Logan, UT the oldest of four children born to Raymond Charles Somers and Josephine Harris. As a teenager she worked for Bernina Fabrics. Susan graduated from Logan High in 1969 where her love and passion for drama and music was nurtured through her sewing abilities. She later graduated from Utah State University in 1973 with her Bachelors in Elementary Education and Special Education and a minor in Humanities. She taught 2nd Grade Special Education for the next three years at Jefferson Elementary School Ogden, UT. During that time she met and then later married Donald K. Speth in the Logan LDS Temple on August 2nd 1974. After her husband graduated from Weber State College in 1976, they moved to Logan and later to Providence. Her greatest joy was to adopt two wonderful children in 1978 and 1981. She was dedicated to raising her children and was an industrious homemaker with several part-time jobs. She kept up the maintenance on their apartment rentals and sewed children's dresses for "Daddy's Little Princess". Later in her life she worked for her father in the video store as a bookkeeper where she loved to talk with the customers that came into the video store until it was closed. Susan held many church callings a few of which she served faithfully were Primary President for the Logan 4th Ward, Stake Nursery Leader for the Providence South Stake, 1st Counselor in the Primary for the Providence 3rd ward, and volunteer at the Logan LDS Temple in the baptismal font. For the past 20 years Susan actively served in various positions in the Cub Scouting community for the Providence South Stake. She also had a great love and passion for doing genealogy work and would spend what little she could researching the names and places of her ancestors. Susan will be greatly missed by all that knew her, for she was a loving and very caring daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond Charles and Josephine Harris Somers, grandparents Alexander Eli and Blanche Bullen Harris Richmond, UT and George Fredrick and Elizabuth Malinda Sorensen Somers Garland, UT, father-in-law Kenneth Carl Speth, and a grandson Cody Garrett Smothermon. Susan is survived by her loving husband, Donald Kenneth Speth Providence, UT, Her daughter Teresa and Rodney Glenn Smothermon Sr. Grand Cane, LA, and their children, Lukaus Matthew Myers, and Rodney Glenn Smothermon Jr., her son Mark Donald Speth Salt Lake City, UT. Susan is also survived by her sister's Sondra and Kenneth Thorell Salt Lake City, UT, Stephanie and Todd Fronberg Marion, TX and her brother Richard and Pamela Somers St. George, UT and their families. Funeral Services are being provided by The Nelson Funeral Home of Logan, UT. Bishop James Swink of the Providence 3rd Ward will be presiding over the services. The funeral viewing will be held on Sunday October 4th 2009 from 6-8pm at Nelson Funeral home located at 162 East 400 North Logan, UT. There will be a viewing on Monday October 5th 2009 from 9:30am-10:30am, and the funeral services will start at 11am at the Providence 3rd Ward Church House on 3rd South and Main Street in Providence, UT. Following the funeral services there will be a graveside interment held in the Smithfield Cemetery at 1pm. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
