Shirley Howard
1930-2014
Smithfield, Utah Shirley Mae Howard, our happy and sweet mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away March 18, 2014 at the age of 83 in Logan, Utah. She was born in Redding , California on August 19, 1930 to Ivan and Helen Swartz Garrison. Shirley was adopted by her grandparents Amos and Matilda Moyer at the age of 3 weeks and lived on an oil lease in Fellows, California. When Matilda passed away Shirley went to live with her father Ivan Garrison and step mother, Monette Garrison in Taft, California. She graduated from Taft Union High School in 1948. Then she attended B.I.O.L.A. Bible Institute of Los Angeles for a year. She had to drop out of college when an employer wouldn't pay her. She worked as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force . She married her lifelong sweetheart Harold Richard Howard on November 22, 1952 in California. They were blessed with 2 daughters: Vicky Lynn and Pamela Kay. In 1966 they moved to Holladay, Utah and lived there until 2010 when Harold passed away. Then Shirley moved to Smithfield, Utah to be near her daughter Pam.
Shirley worked at the U.S. Postal Service from 1973 to 1990.
Shirley loved to plant lots of flowers in their yard, and it always looked so colorful, vibrant, and picture perfect.
Shirley loved to watch basketball and football games. She cheered her favorite teams; the Broncos, Utah Jazz, and BYU, on with great energy.
Her favorite holidays were Christmas and Easter. And she loved to decorate lavishly for each holiday. Her other favorites were reading, summer vacations, diet coke, and the colors turquoise, purple.
Shirley will be greatly missed by all those who knew her and enjoyed her endless positive attitude and laughter.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, and parents.
She is survived by her children , Vicky Mark Van Sickle of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Pamela Danny Peterson of Smithfield, Utah. 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two half brothers: Keith Debbie Garrison of Sanger, California and Skip Vickie Garrison of Sunnyvale, California.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00am on Monday, March 24 in the Smithfield 21st Ward, 345 East 300 South, Smithfield, Utah. The viewing will be Monday 9:30am to 10:30am at the Smithfield 21st Ward. Internment will be at the Smithfield City Cemetery.
