Seth J. Bird

Logan ? Seth J. Bird, 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the Utah State Veterans? Nursing Home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born April 13, 1925 in Mendon, Utah to Phineas Reeves and Edna Susanna Ladle Bird. Seth attended elementary school in Mendon, Junior High in Wellsville and graduated from South Cache High in Hyrum. He participated in many sports and activities and was secretary of the FFA. He enjoyed being raised on a small farm, and raising a garden. He served in the Armed Services during World War II as Sergeant in the 336th Complement Squadron, being sent to the Marianna Islands, Guam and Saipan. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 8, 1948 he married his sweetheart, Barbara Rigby in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they raised a family of four children. Seth worked for Cache County for forty years. He was the Cache County Road Superintendent, overseeing 800 miles of roads, and had a nickname for every road. He participated in community activities and was a member of the local Lions Organization. He served two terms on the River Heights Town Council. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Along with his wife Barbara, he served as dance director in Mendon and River Heights Wards. He has served in various callings throughout the years, including the Elders Quorum presidency, Sunday School Superintendency, Deacons Quorum Advisor, Executive Secretary and Counselor in the River Heights First Ward Bishopric. He and Barbara served a church service mission at the Family History Center in Logan. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; four children: Douglas MaRee, Newton; Diane Paul Mower, Kearns; Christine Kent Oviatt, Vernal and Patricia Bruce Lyman, Blanding; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Alton Trenna Bird, Mendon. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2004 at the River Heights First Ward Providence Stake Center, 800 South 600 East. Friends and family may call Sunday evening, January 11, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and on Monday morning at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Mendon City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family on line at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
