Ruth West Gregory

Ruth West Gregory, 92, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009 in Fruit Heights, Utah surrounded by many loving family members.
Ruth was born to Frank LeRoy West and Hannah Lillian Judd on December 4, 1916 in Morgan, Utah. When Ruth was 2 years old, her mother Lillian died from influenza. Ruth was taken care of by her Aunt Fannie Richens until her father married Martha Sparrow. Ruth attended schools in Cache County and graduated from North Cache High and was a graduate of LDS Institute. Ruth married Douglas Hawkeswood Gregory on November 6, 1936. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on February 18, 1942.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many responsible ward and stake auxiliary positions such as Young Women President and Relief Society President. She loved to read and study the gospel. She had a love for family history research, genealogical and temple work, teaching many classes during her lifetime. She was active in the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers in both Utah and Arizona.
Ruth was a lifelong resident of Smithfield, Utah. She was involved in many community and civic organizations including: Health Day Chairman, PTA President, American Legion Auxiliary, Civic Club, Smithfield Beautification co-chairman receiving national recognition, 13 years of Utah Girls State counselor and director.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Douglas H. Gregory, sisters, Margaret West; Evelyn Johnson, Brothers, Eldon and Louis West; Stepbrothers, Lloyd, Royal and Duane Sparrow; stepsisters, Demoine Bosworth and Cora Hogan and son in law, Theron C. Archibald.
She is survived by her children, Ray W. Anna Gregory of Smithfield, Darrell Dee Earleen Gregory of Salt Lake City, Margaret Cline Hendrickson of Smithfield, Mary Jo Ted Hodges of Fruit Heights, Utah and Barbara Joe Kment of Ajo, Arizona; 19 grandchildren and 65 great grandchildren. Total of 122 descendents. Survivors also include a brother, Leon West, step sister Marie Corbridge, sister in laws Delone West and Bernice Gregory, brother in law Robert Clemenson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 12 noon in the Smithfield 3rd Ward Chapel, 640 North 200 East. Friends and family may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smtihfield and Wednesday at the Church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
