Rita Jean Smith

October 20, 1933 — June 6, 2002

Rita Smith Rita Jean Cannon Smith, 68, of Ogden, died June 6, 2002, at Care Source The Residence Hospice in Salt Lake City, of cancer. Rita was born October 28, 1933, in Deweyville, UT, a daughter of Thales Byard and Ruth Jensen Cannon. She married Richard Edward Smith on September 16, 1961, in Elko, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She graduated from Bear River High School and subsequently lived in Kaysville, South Ogden, Layton and Ogden. She was employed at Utah General Depot, as a stewardess for United Airlines, The Internal Revenue Service, and retired from Hill Air Force Base. She was a member of the Ogden Canyon Hollows Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was previously a member of the Layton Snow Canyon LDS Ward. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, traveling and recently worked as a volunteer reading with disadvantaged school children in Ogden. Rita was always a caregiver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, on July 7, 1978, and her parents. She is survived by two sons, Kevin Richard Tracy Carrera Smith, Davis, CA; Justin Stanley Smith, San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Lesa Ann Thayne, Layton, UT; Julie Jean Dan Sheldon, Salt Lake City, UT; six grandchildren; two sisters, Joann Reuben Oxborrow, Deweyville, UT and Judy Leonard Burklow, Fair Oaks, CA; a brother, Earl Kathy Cannon of North Ogden, UT. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at the Deweyville LDS Ward Chapel, 10750 North Highway 38. Friends may call Monday, June 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home, 111 North 100 East, Tremonton and Tuesday, June 11th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Deweyville Cemetery. The children would like to extend their gratitude to Rita?s siblings and their spouses and the caring staff at Care Source The Residence Hospice.
