Richard Bruce Garrett

August 13, 1937 — June 8, 2004

Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, mentor and friend Bruce Garrett, 66, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at his home in Logan, Utah from complications of Emphysema. He was surrounded by loving family members. Bruce was born August 13, 1937 in Preston, Idaho to William and Leona Hugie Garrett, the seventh of eight children. He married Alta Sharp May 8, 1959 in the Logan Temple. Bruce attended primary and secondary schools in Preston, Idaho. After graduating from Preston High School, he attended two years at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Bruce worked for the federal government with the Geological Survey measuring the stream flow of the tributaries to the Bear River in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. When his children were young and not in school, Bruce frequently took them on his weeklong trips, which provided the family with materials for many a tall tale and a good laugh telling and re-telling experiences at family gatherings. He retired in 1995 after 30 years of service. Bruce developed strong friendships, which he valued dearly, with many of his work associates that have continued through job transfers and throughout retirement. Bruce enjoyed the outdoors. He learned to tie flies and loved to go fly-fishing. He enjoyed taking his family camping, hunting and fishing. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his membership at the Preston Golf and Country Club. A perfect day in his life would be to golf in Preston in the afternoon and then head out for fly-fishing in the evening at Mink Creek or Cub River, or to see if the Bear River was down below Oneida Station. Or, maybe, a perfect day would be the excitement of the opening day of the pheasant hunt. Or, perhaps it would be a week spent fishing in Island Park and Yellowstone. Bruce loved to travel and he saw much of the world. He toured Japan and Europe. He took cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Panama Canal. On his final cruise, Bruce and Alta invited their children and their spouses on a wonderful cruise to Hawaii. Bruce is survived by his wife, Alta of Logan; his four children: Todd Kari of Kaysville, Utah; Douglas Linda of Millville, Utah; Randy Myndee of Mendon, Utah; and Kristine David Palazzolo of West Jordan, Utah; 16 grandchildren; three brothers: Sidney Jenele of Smithfield, Utah; Jack Karma of Preston, Idaho and James of Preston, Idaho; two sisters: Joan Johnson of Preston, Idaho; Judy Steven Porter of Preston, Idaho. His parents, William and Leona Garrett and two brothers, Dale and Con Garrett preceded him in . The family would like to thank all those who have come to visit, express concern, help and offered help during Bruce?s extended illness. We would like to express a special thanks to Alpine Home Care and IHC Hospice for their assistance in our time of need. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004 in the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, Utah. Friends may call Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m prior to services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . The family suggests donations be made to the American Lung Association of Utah, 1930 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106-2317 in Bruce?s memory.
