Puett LaMar P.L. Jones

February 15, 1920 — September 17, 2003

P.L. Jones, 83, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at the Sunshine Terrace Nursing Facility, peacefully in his sleep from cancer. Puett LaMar Jones Jr. P.L. was born on February 15, 1920 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the only child to Puett LaMar Jones Sr. and Ruth Kathaleen Gibson. Although he managed to live all over the great USA and primarily lived most of his years in California, he always stayed a ?true southerner at heart?. ?GO North Carolina State ? He loved those Tar Heels!? His last thoughts were going home to Charlotte. He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1937. He enjoyed playing basketball and football. He continued his education at North Carolina State for 2 more years in aeronautical engineering. But building aircraft was on his mind and Southern California was the place to be, so he packed his bags in 1940 and drove to Los Angeles and immediately became an apprentice in the aircraft manufacturing industry. Shortly after moving to California he met his life long love, Evelyn Frances Smith on a double date- she was the other guy?s date. They were married in Glendale on July 12, 1941 and spent many happy years living there. For the past 62 years they have enjoyed fishing, golfing and being with their family.World War II came along and interfered with P.L?s plans for schooling, but always a proud American, he joined the Army Air Corp, later known as the United States Air Force and became a Technical Sergeant. He served as the crew chief for the 115th Bomber Squadron. He served his country for 9 years during World War II and the Korean Conflict.Dad enjoyed life and he had several things he had quiet a passion for ? Dad loved airplanes and he was always building models of them as a small boy- all the way into his old age. He only stopped when his eyesight would no longer allow him to do the finely crafted detailed work. He was a detail person and was exacting in all he did and expected the same from those around him. He also loved to fly and obtained his private pilots license. Football always on the weekends ? especially if USC or North Carolina State were playing. And then there was fishing ? he had to get the big one- and he did, several times. And you can?t forget that hole in one ? several times, also!Dad lived to work. He worked for many companies through out the years, but yet the one he most loved was creating and testing the launch computer for Apollo to put the man on the moon. He finally retired from Bourns Intl. in 1985.Retired and moving on, off Mom and Dad went in their truck, trailer and boat to spend many happy hours golfing, fishing and catching the ?Big One? at Lake Pend Orielle, Idaho where they spent many happy summers on their boat the ?Honey-DO? and sharing good times with their close friends. But Dad couldn?t stand not to work for too long and so went to work for Wal-Mart and has been there the last 10 years. You might have known him as the ?paint guy?. He loved working at Wal-Mart and so appreciated all the friendships that he made there during these past 5 years living in Logan. I don?t think Dad ever met a person he couldn?t talk to.In 1998, Mom and Dad moved to Logan to be with their grandson, Ethan, the apple of their eye. Ethan and Dad shared the love of planes and military and you could see them walking down at the Air Force Museum with their flight jackets on.But the one place Dad just always had to be was home, and home was wherever Mom was. It didn?t matter if they were in California, Connecticut, Louisiana, Utah, the Providence Assisted Living Center or Sunshine Terrace. Home is where Mom was and she was always at his side. That is all that ever mattered to him.The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Stanley and his staff, Sunshine Terrace and Providence Assisted Living for the kind and caring service given to Dad and Mom during Dad?s final months. They allowed a very proud man to die with dignity and respect. Their support and treatment of one with Alzheimer?s is to be commended. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son, Terry L. Jones, La Crescenta, California; daughter, Carolyn L. Keller Guy R., River Heights, Utah. Grandchildren: Tom Jones Gail, Pamela Risner, David Jones, all of Yucca Valley, California; Jean Aslaman Sam, La Crescenta, California; Ethan Keller, River Heights, Utah and 6 great-grandchildren. His father, mother and daughter-in-law, Marte Jones, preceded him in death. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at the Logan City Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Cancer Society or Alzheimer?s Research is appreciated.
