Phyllis Nilson Tout passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008 at Sunshine Terrace, Logan, Utah. She was born Feb. 1, 1916 in Smithfield, Utah. Phyllis was the fourth daughter born to Oliver and Millicent Low Nilson. Phyllis lived in Smithfield, attended Summit School, Smithfield Jr. High, North Cache High, and Utah State University. She married Glen Miles Tout on Dec. 17, 1935 in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived all of their lives in Smithfield except while Glen attended school in Berkley, California. They had three daughters, Diana, Susan, and Nanette. Glen passed away on Aug 8th, 1976. Phyllis was a cheer leader at North Cache. She loved music and loved to dance. Phyllis and Glen would attend dances every Saturday night at the Dansante in Logan. She was a skilled leader and helped found the Smithfield Civic Club, being President twice, and was President of the Utah Federated Women's Clubs, a state organization. She loved to play Bridge and belonged to a Bridge club with her many good friends for more than 50 years. Phyllis went back to school and was a graduate of Utah State University with a BS degree in Education. She taught 1st and 2nd grades in the Logan School District for 25 years. Phyllis was President of the educational organization, Association of Childhood Education International, both at the local and state level. She also served on the National ACEI board and presented at conventions in cities throughout the United States. After she retired, she volunteered at the Logan Regional Hospital for 25 years. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Retired Teachers Association. She loved to learn, traveling to Europe twice, Russia and many cities in the United States. She loved sports and was a great fan of her husband, who was coach of the Smithfield Blue Sox, her grandson who was on the Aggie Football team, and her daughters and grandchildren. Later she was a dedicated Jazz fan. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as President of the Primary and YWMIA organizations, a teacher in the Relief Society and a Visiting Teacher for many years. After the passing of her husband Glen, she lived as an independent widow for 32 years. She loved her family and grandchildren and always attended any and all of their activities. She is survived by her daughters Diana Lyle Esplin, Nanette Lowdy King, Smithfield, Utah, Susan Edward Albert Michener, Williamsburg, Virginia, 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruth and Blanche Nilson toddlers, Minnie and Orson Daines; a son-in-law, Edward Michener; a grandson, Christopher Michener; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Benavides. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Smithfield 10th Ward Chapel, 451 South 250 East. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Saturday morning from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to services.
