Phyllis Going Maughan Smart, loving wife, mother, and friend passed away at Maple Springs Memory Care in Logan, Utah, on September 29, 2018. She was born February 25, 1930, to Alvin T. Maughan and G. Evelyn Going. She was raised in Weston, Idaho with her 4 younger siblings.
Phyllis married her sweetheart, Boyd Hyde Smart, of Dayton, Idaho, on July 28, 1950, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with 8 wonderful children. Throughout their marriage they lived in Dayton and Montpelier, Idaho and Laketown, Richmond and Logan, Utah.
Most of her employment was secretarial, specifically at Parnell’s Packing Company in Laketown, Utah, and Bear Lake Motor in Montpelier, Idaho.
She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all of her life. She enjoyed serving in various callings, especially as an ordinance worker in the Logan Temple. Together she and her husband served two full-time missions. First they served in New Zealand and then they served in Los Angeles, California.
Mom and Dad enjoyed being together. Throughout their life they were involved in many projects. They worked side by side tying quilts for humanitarian and for gifts, cooking corn dogs for family and friends, helping their children with home-building projects, and serving their fellow-men in all walks of life, no matter the need. They worked hard and they played hard.
They enjoyed the outdoors and went on many trips with family and friends. They looked forward to and enjoyed family gatherings, especially at their cabins at Bear Lake and in Card Canyon.
After her husband’s passing she moved to Pioneer Valley Lodge where she met and enjoyed new friends. Due to her declining health she moved to Maple Springs Memory Care where she met and enjoyed new friends - especially all of her caregivers and they enjoyed her. The family is extremely grateful to the kindness shown by staff and caregivers at Maple Springs.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, and a great-granddaughter.
She is survived by two sisters: LaVoyle Denlinger (Bountiful, Utah) and Lurene Kalawaia (Salt Lake City, Utah), a brother Alvin Maughan (Salt Lake City, Utah). Her surviving children are: Christine (Dave) Peterson of Ogden, Utah, Craig (Shirley) Smart of Logan, Utah, David (Betty) Smart of Millville, Utah, Larry (Joyce) Smart of Providence, Utah (currently serving a full-time mission in Hawaii), Tom (Kathy) Smart of Montpelier, Idaho, Marilyn (Dennis) Vanderbeek of Rigby, Idaho, Charlotte (Jason) Brandley of West Point, Utah, and Jason (Ellan) Smart of Logan, Utah; 31 Grandchildren and 84+ great grandchildren.
Our lives have been forever changed by Phyllis’s thoughtfulness and love. Although we will miss her greatly, we are comforted by the thought of the many arms that welcomed her to a great reunion.
Mom wanted to declare her testimony to the world. “I want all who may read these pages to know that I have a testimony of Jesus Christ. He is my Savior, my Redeemer. His gospel, if studied and lived, is the way whereby we may return to His presence.”
