Smithfield ? Pearl Ethel Gardner, 92, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2002 at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Logan, Utah. Pearl was born March 9, 1910 in Antigo, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph Sinclair and Naomi Rodgers Sinclair. She obtained her education in the Wisconsin area and taught in the elementary grades for thirteen years. She also worked as an editor of a newspaper in Wisconsin. During World War II, she joined the Waves of the U.S. Navy and served her country for three years including an assignment in communications at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. she was given the War Service Award in November of 1945 for outstanding voluntary service in the successful operation of price control and rationing. In 1945 she married Charles Henry Roberts. The were later divorced. In 1954 she married John Homer Kegg. On July 16, 1970, Pearl married John C. Gardner of Bear Lake, Utah. They made their home in the Los Angeles, California area. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on June 22, 1974. John and Pearl moved to Smithfield, Utah in 1978 to escape the crowding of the big city. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple. Pearl was a member of the Smithfield American Legion Post 58. She contributed many letters to the editor of the Herald Journal promoting two of her great values; the education of children and love of country. Pearl was a good friend to her neighbors and many associates and is known for her keen sense of humor. She was an active member of Smithfield 3rd Ward and was serving as a visiting teacher at the age of 90. Pearl has two sisters, Sunnie McClain of California and Bernece Wilker, deceased. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Seybert of Las Vegas, Nevada and two granddaughters, Lorelei Biggins of Las Vegas, Nevada and Shannon Kimberly Seybert. Funeral services will be held at the Smithfield 3rd Ward Chapel, 79 East 200 South at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 and are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home. A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Smithfield American Legion Post 58.
