Oreta Johnson Satterthwaite

January 22, 1906 — January 26, 2006

After a long and full life of 90 years, our dear mother, grandmother, and sister, Oreta Johnson Satterthwaite passed away peacefully at her home in Logan, Utah on January 26, 2006. Oreta Satterthwaite was born January 22, 1916 in Garden City, Utah. She grew up on the Meadowville Ranch during the summers, but spent her winters in Laketown so she could attend school without having to ride horseback from Meadowville each day. After graduating as valedictorian from North Rich High School, she attended Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University. During high school, she met her future husband, Earl Satterthwaite, from Garden City, Utah. They were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple in 1934 and spent over 53 wonderful years together. Oreta has always been active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She held many positions in various church organizations including Primary President, Relief Society Counselor, and President of the Stake Mutual Association. She especially enjolyed her positions in the Primary organization. Later in life, she and her husband served an LDS mission to Rapid City, South Dakota. Oreta spent her life in the service of others. Countless hours of her life were devoted to providing meals to family and friends. For fourteen years, patients at the Logan Regional Hospital were cheered by her warm care as a volunteer. Oreta?s children and grandchildren cherish many heirlooms such as wedding dresses and quilts she made. Even late in her life, struggling with poor eyesight, she continued to serve by calling elderly shut-ins and crocheting gifts for family. When not serving, Oreta enjoyed various activities around her Bear Lake Valley home. Many beautiful summer days were spent working and playing with family on their lakefront property. She loved to work in her numerous flowerbeds with beautiful results. In her youth, Oreta enjoyed dancing and having parties with friends. Later in life she loved nothing more than holding a new grandchild in her arms. Oreta is survived by her four daughters and their spouses: Gay Dean and Dennis Burdick of Montpelier, ID; Judy and Jim Morgan of Layton, UT; Earlene and Douglas Rex of Salt Lake City, UT; and Oreta Sue and Joe Rice of Soda Springs, ID. She is also survived by one sister: Fern and Antone Hunter of St. George, UT; as well as 45 grand and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in by five brothers and one sister: Harold, Leo, Farrell, James, Max, and Margueritte, as well as her loving husband, Earl. After twenty years apart, Oreta has finally reunited with her love and companion, never to be separated again. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Laketown Ward Chapel, 115 South 100 East, Laketown, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and Monday at the church in Laketown from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to services.
