Opal Lavon Stenquist

Opal Lavon George Stenquist (87) passed away on March 17, 2022, of causes incident to age. In the days immediately preceding her death, she was enveloped in the loving arms of her family who are the joy of her life. Many tender mercies were experienced and gratefully acknowledged.
Lavon was born on September 2, 1934, in Tremonton, Utah, to Joseph and Lenora George, the eldest of seven children. She was a simple farmer’s daughter who never forgot her roots, and who lived the lessons learned on the farm of hard work, thrift, and sacrifice.
She met Wayne Stenquist at a church dance. He would become the love of her life. They were sealed for eternity in the Logan Temple on July 20, 1953. To this union were born four children: Debra, Michael, Ron, and Wade. They also opened their home and hearts to Debbie Willetto and Robert Vigil. Mom and dad complemented one another, and after 68 years of marriage, were rarely seen apart. It was not uncommon to see them dress for the day in the same color without planning to do so.
Lavon lived a life of quiet and meaningful service to family and friends. Our homelife was safe and dependable. Cooked cereal for breakfast at 7 a.m. started the day off right, and sitting down together as a family for dinner each evening at 5:30 p.m. brought the day to a close. Mom’s hands were always busy sewing our clothes and creating beautiful quilts, afghans, and other fine handwork that wrap her family in love. Thanksgiving and Christmas were special times, complete with homemade rolls, apple pies, and banana cream pies.
Each year the canning bottles were filled with fruits and vegetables to meet her family’s needs. Her attention to detail included balancing the checkbook to the penny each month. Mom and dad’s home was neat and clean where all were welcome and experienced feelings of love and acceptance.
Lavon had a special love for genealogy and family history. She and dad compiled histories and created beautiful books for their children and grandchildren. They wanted to be a bridge between the generations before them and after them. She had a tender love for departed loved ones.
Wayne and Lavon served in the Washington DC South Mission. They also served as officiators in the Logan Temple for 23 years. Many dear friendships were made, and lives touched through their love for temple work.
Mom was small in physical size, but her spirit was huge. Her strength came from a deep and abiding faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her daily prayers for family were sweet and sincere. She lived her life with courage and determination, and she faced the end of her mortal life with peace in her heart.
Lavon is survived by her beloved husband, Wayne, and children: Debra (Robert) Balling, Michael (Jennifer) Stenquist, Ron (Julie) Stenquist, Wade (Brenda) Stenquist, and Debbie Willetto. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, sisters: DeAun Johnson and LaRee Bodily, brothers: Douglas George and Lloyd George, and sisters-in-law: Pam George and Ileen Turner. Lavon is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter-in-law: Jill Stenquist, granddaughter: Aleesha Stenquist, great grandson: Samuel Weber, a brother: Shelton George, and a sister: Arlyn Checketts.
A viewing will take place at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan on Tuesday, March 22 from 6 p.m. Funeral services will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 125 West 600 North, Logan on Wednesday, March 23 at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral.
