Norman Eugene Stockton, 81, of Richmond, Utah, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 2, 2010. He was born May 7, 1928 in Solider Summit, Utah. He was the second of three children born to Harry Y Stockton & Nordell May Jones Stockton. He was still quite young when his family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served a full time mission for his Heavenly Father in South Africa. While serving in South Africa he met the woman of his dreams, Gwenneth Ingram. After he returned home from his mission he got her a visa to come to Canada, where they were married. After a short honeymoon, Norm was drafted into the United States Army. Once he found out he could go to Officer Training School and become a helicopter pilot, he & Gwen decided this was his best career option. They spent the next 20 years 1952 -1972 raising a family of 3 boys and 3 girls while moving from one military base to the next. Norm served two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his military career he was awarded numerous ribbons and medals for bravery and valor. He was wounded towards the end of his second tour in Vietnam for which he received the Purple Heart. Throughout his travels he remained a devoted member of the church. He faithfully served in many different positions, always bearing his testimony of his love for our Savior and the truthfulness of the gospel. After retiring from the Army at the rank of Lt. Colonel , he moved to Cache Valley. They built a home in Richmond, Utah. He taught ROTC at Logan High School and attended USU to finish his degree in Business Administration. He was an insurance agent with the Logan Agency for many years. After retiring He and his lovely wife returned to South Africa to serve another full-time mission. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill Stockton, his daughter Robin Lynn Sanders & one grand child Colby Gleed.
He is survived by is wife of 57 years, Gwen Stockton; 5 children, Melody Michael Gleed of Smithfield Utah; Brad Rainey Stockton of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Garth Stockton of Richmond, UT; Heather Brent Halverson of Apache Junction, Arizona; & CoreyHeidi Stockton of North Logan, UT; his sister Dixie Fleeger of Medford, Oregon; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
His funeral will be Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at noon at the LDS Church, 150 South 100 East, Richmond, UT. There will be a viewing Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, UT and at the church from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Norm was a loving man, devoted to his family, church and country. The family wishes to thank neighbors, friends & ward members for their thoughtfulness, prayers & support.
