NaRay Henry Ormond

NaRay Henry Ormond, 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on Friday, July 27, 2012 due to cardiac arrest. He was born July 22, 1922 in North Logan, Utah. He was the first of six children born to Ada Myrtle Baugh and John Henry Ormond. He spent his younger childhood living in Arbon, ID helping on his parent's wheat farm. At age 11 his family returned to North Logan. During his senior year at South Cache High School, he was a State FFA Officer. He and 2 other students representing South Cache High won the National Championship Dairy Judging contest in Chicago, IL. in 1940. On Oct. 19, 1943 he married Anna Marie Hancey in the Logan LDS Temple. NaRay proudly served his country in the 89th Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star while fighting in Germany. After the war ended, he returned to Logan to complete his studies at Utah State Agricultural College receiving his master's degree in Dairy Science in May of 1948. After graduation he and Anna moved with their young children to Chicago, IL.
He began his professional career in Sullivan, IL. as a research chemist for Armour and Co., eventually moving to Armour & Co. headquarters in Chicago, IL. as Mid-west Regional Manager of Production-Dairy Products. After a 20 year tenure with Armor & Co., he accepted a position in Iowa as a plant manager for the entire dairy processing plant – Tony Downs & Co. He ended his career there in Iowa working for the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture as the Director of the Dairy Division.
NaRay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held many callings from that of Boy Scout Leader to serving in bishopric positions. He had the privilege of assisting in the construction of a new chapel for the Chicago Heights, IL ward, back in the days when members were more involved in the actual building process. While living in Des Moines, IA, NaRay and his wife accepted a call to serve a two yr. mission in the Chicago Temple. In the fall of 2000 he and Anna moved back to their beloved Cache Valley. They served as temple officiators in the Logan Temple for three years.
He had a lifelong interest in current events, loved gardening, and had a work ethic like no other. He carried that work ethic right into the last week of his life. He is survived by his children, Michael Ormond, St. George, UT; Susan Tom Nelson, Paradise, UT; Mark Ormond, Cedar City, UT; Charles Ormond, Spring, TX; a brother, Robert Ormond, San Anselmo, CA; sisters Marjorie Dawes, Clearfield, UT and Valarie Sweeten, Washington Terrace, UT; brothers in law, Morris Hancey, Logan, UT; Wayne Bankhead, Wellsville, UT; Landell Ballard, Logan, UT and sisters in law Marilyn Ormond, San Anselmo, CA; Sharon Ormond, Lodi, CA; Pat Hancey, Logan, UT; Jackie Hancey, Millville, UT; Rosalie Hancey, Lewiston, UT; Zona Hancey, Ogden, UT; Faye Bankhead, Wellsville, UT; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna; son David; brothers Orlan and Delmar, and grandson Wayne Nelson.
A viewing will be held on Thursday Aug 2, 2012 from 9:30 to 10:30am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am. Both the viewing and funeral service will be held at the Logan LDS Hillcrest First Ward on 875 N 1500 E. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Military honors will be given by the South Cache American Legion Post #47.
