Corporal Merl L. Horne, born November 28, 1921 to Myrtle Clark and Leland Horne of Logan, Utah, passed away August 28, 2006 in Santa Barbara, California after a lingering illness. Merl attended school in the Logan Cache School District at Logan, Utah, graduating in 1937. He was also in the school districts ROTC program. Merl later enrolled in the Logan Police Force as a rooky officer. After moving to Salt Lake, he was employed as a police guard for local commercial industrial firms. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force in World War II. At the end of the war, he was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal. In 1952 he moved to west Los Angeles where he enrolled in Design Drafting and Illustration. Merl was preceded in death by his father, Leland Horne; his mother, Shirley Myrtle Horne; Grandparents and a baby sister, Ruth. Merl is now survived by his wife, Shirley Ethel Horne, of Lompoc, California, where they made their home; two brothers: Ronald Horne of Brigham City, Utah and Gail Horne of West Jordan, Utah; and a sister, Shirley Jones of Logan, Utah. In his latter years, preceding his passing, he was employed at the Vandenberg Air Base as a Drafting Air Frame Design Engineer near their home in Lompoc. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 18, 2006 at the Logan City Cemetery in Logan, Utah with military honors.
