Melvin F. Mitton, 73, of Smithfield, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012, at Sunshine Terrace after an extended hospital stay. He was born May 11, 1938, in Providence, Utah, to M.J. and LaVelma Mitton. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. He graduated from North Cache High School and attended Utah State University. Mel served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962. He and his wife, Judy, were later married on April 26, 1963, in the Logan LDS Temple. Mel enjoyed many activities including snowmobling, hunting, fishing, and gardening; as well as maintaining and repairing automobiles and household appliances. He worked in the construction profession most of his life, working for both Modern Builders Supply and International Housing Division. He is survived by his wife, Judy; two children, Craig and Melissa; a brother, Reed, and sister, Joyce Rainey. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margene Arch Thurston, and his sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Mitton and Ann Larry Kelsey. A viewing will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012, at the Smithfield 12th Ward/Smithfield North Stake Center; followed by graveside services at Smithfield Cemetery.
