Garland, Utah—Our beloved mother, Melba Jones Capener, 89, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008 of age related causes at the Bear River Valley Care Center in Tremonton, Utah. Melba was born August 4, 1918 in Orem, Utah to Irvin and Amelia "Millie" Barrett Jones. Melba's elementary education took place at the Cross Roads and McKinley elementary schools after her parents moved to East Tremonton in 1925. She graduated from Bear River High School and Seminary in Garland, Utah in 1936 where she was active in the color guard and served as Vice President of her senior class. She was active in the 4-H club and won 1st place in a health contest at Utah State as the "Healthiest Girl in the State of Utah." She then attended LDS Business College until she was called home to care for her sick mother. Melba married Max Garn Capener February 16, 1939 in the Logan Temple, Logan, Utah. She moved into the Capener family home in Garland and continued to live there until recently. Garn preceded her in death February 6, 1997 after 58 years of marriage. Melba was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having taught and served in the Primary, Mutual, Relief Society, as a Visiting Teacher in the Garland Ward as well as having served on the Stake Relief Society Board. She and Garn were both teachers of the Young Married Group for several years. She was also active in the community having served as President of the Civic and Homes Arts Club as well as helping to organize the local Dance Club during World War II. Laurie Capener; six grandchildren, Jennifer Jill David Beardall, Jared Garn Emily Peck, Jessica Joan Paul Swenson, Elizabeth Jayne Garrett Braithwaite, Jana Lynne Alexander and Michael Allyn Alexander; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin and Amelia "Millie" Barrett Jones; brothers, Darrell, LaVon, Byron, Murray and sister, Beulah "Billie" Clowes; father and mother-in-law, Arthur Rigby and Mary Larelda Garn Capener; husband, Max Garn Capener and great-granddaughter, Hope Pascale Beardall. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home, 111 North 100 East, Tremonton, UT with Bishop Paul Beus conducting. Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment will follow in the Garland City Cemetery.
