Maxine Spencer Anderson, much-loved mother and grandmother, passed away on July 17, 2013 in Logan, at the home of her son, Randy, after a struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Maxine was born in Logan, Utah on August 27, 1928 to John Bennion and Stella McCann Spencer. She was the youngest of 5 children, all of whom preceded her in death. Maxine was raised on Center Street in Logan by a single mother, who worked hard to provide for her children during the depression. Mom always recalled with fondness her childhood near the train depot. She attended Logan City schools Ellis and Woodruff Elementary and loved high school and the lasting friendships made there. While still in high school, she met a "Smithfield boy", Lawrence O. Anderson, who was on leave from the U.S. Navy. He mailed her an engagement ring and they were married on January 31, 1947 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
Maxine and Larry lived for a short time in Roy, Utah, then settled in Smithfield for the next 50 years. She enjoyed her neighborhood and friendships made there, especially her dear friend, Sylvia Toolson. Maxine worked at Summit Elementary for 20 years as one of the first reading aids in the county school system. She loved her job and her students, but left to take care of Larry after he suffered a heart attack.
Maxine was a member of the LDS church and loved serving in the Relief Society and Primary Presidencies, where she made many lasting friendships.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her parents and siblings, and a great granddaughter, Hinklee Gibbons. She is survived by her children, Neil Sherry Anderson, Randy Teri Anderson, Jill Kevin Baxter and Julie John Allen, 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren who love her and will miss her.
We as a family would like to thank Randy and Teri for the exceptional love and care they have given Mom over the past 16 months. We would also like to express appreciation to Dr. Stones for his kindness and care of mom over the years. A special thanks to CNS staff, Holly and Julie, for their exceptional care of mom as well as Terrace Grove Assisted Living.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, July 22 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 East Center Street in Logan, Utah. A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday evening and prior to services from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Burial will be in the Smithfield Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family online at
