Mary Chambers Mather

January 19, 1911 — June 7, 2003

Mary Chambers Mather, cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Saturday, June 07, 2003 in the Logan Regional Hospital at the age of 92. She was born January 19, 1911, in Smithfield, Utah, to Alfred Bence and Mary Ann Fishburn Chambers, where she resided her entire life.
When she was 5 years old, Mary?s father died, so the she and her brothers and sisters learned to work hard on the family farm. She topped beets and was faster than most boys. That same work ethic followed throughout her life as she always kept a bountiful, weedless garden. She raised beautiful gladiolas often sharing them with friends and neighbors. Mary attended Smithfield Summit, skipping 5th grade, Smithfield Junior High, and graduated from North Cache High School where she excelled in mathematics. She worked as a bookkeeper for Del Monte until she finally consented to marry Nathan Mather. They were married on December 18, 1936, in the Logan LDS Temple. Nathan preceded her in death on April 18, 1992. Mary?s life was devoted to her four children and their families. She was a tiny ball of energy often working circles around her children and grandchildren. They often commented that they just couldn?t keep up with her. She especially enjoyed baking, canning, soap making, quilting, and candy making with her sisters. She was famous for her double-decker fudge. She crocheted beautiful christening rompers and dresses, shawls, and afghans.
She was well-rounded enjoying music, sports, and dancing. Mary played softball for Smithfield City in her youth. She was an avid Jazz fan. She really enjoyed and supported her grandchildren and great-grand children in any sports or activities. She had a close personal relationship with her Father in Heaven. She memorized all of the scriptures, in all four doctrines, that were spoken by the Savior. She was an avid student of the scriptures and often taught Gospel doctrine classes. She and Nathan served faithfully in the Toronto-Ontario Mission from 1978-80. They also were temple officiators in both the Logan and the Ogden LDS Temples. She made many cherished friendships while working there.
Her surviving children and spouses are Maridene Sidney Hansen, Amalga; Kay Mather, West Valley City; Nancy Ferris Kunz, Sunset; and Robert Vicky Mather, Smithfield. She has 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with another expected in July. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, a son in law, 1 grandchild and 1 great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held in Smithfield 2nd Ward Chapel, Wednesday, June 11, at noon, 175 South 1st West, Smithfield. Viewings will be held Tuesday, June 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Smithfield 85 S Main, and Wednesday at the church from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Michael J. Stones for his kind and tender care.
