Mary Lou Gittins

April 1, 1947 — November 10, 2014

Mary Lou Thornley Gittins passed away Monday November 10, 2014 in Logan, Utah after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born April 1st 1947 to George Elliott and Rosella Nelson Thornley. She was the youngest of three children. Her siblings were DeAnn Jeff LeMieux deceased Larry Cleo Thornley. Mary Lou was reared in Smithfield, Utah and attended Cache County Schools, She attended North Cache High School and graduated in the first graduating class of Sky View High School. She then attended Stevens Henager Business College. On August 19, 1966 she married the luckiest man in the world, Jay W Gittins in Smithfield, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple on November 22, 1968.They are the parents of four children, Angie Rhett Mathews, Debbie Todd Castagno, Jayson Margaret Gittins, and Tonja Wade Karren. They are the proud grandparents of fourteen grandchildren and three great- grandchildren and one great grandchild due any day. Mary Lou worked for Cream O Weber for several years and then Campbell Scientific for twenty-one years before her retirement in 2013. She made many valued friends at both places. Mary Lou loved to knit and taught close friends to love this hobbie also. She loved spending time with the Knotty Knitters club that she was a member of. She had the ability to transform her thoughts into action to help and bless those she came in contact with. She was a faithful member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. She was a true desciple of Jesus Christ. One of her happiest moments was this past July when she attended the Temple with all of her children. Her family was her life and her happiest times were at family parties where there was always plenty to eat. She loved to see her children succeed in life. Mary Lou is survived by her husband and her children. She was preceeded in death by her parents and her older sister DeAnn. The family would like to thank those who cared for her during her struggle. Especially Doctor Courtney Scaife who gave us three more years with her. Doctor Ben-Jacob and his helpers at Cache Valley Cancer Center and Doctor Michael Stones. Funeral services will be at noon Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Smithfield First Ward, 79 East 200 South, Smithfield. There will be a viewing Thursday, November 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at The Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main Smithfield, and at the church from 10:30 until 11:30 Friday Morning.
