Martha Janet Eggen Preston

Martha Janet Eggen Winters Preston passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at her home in Logan. She was born May 8, 1933 in Colusa, California to Silas Tellekamp Eggen and Virginia Burnham Eggen. Jan graduated from Logan High School in 1951 and attended Utah State University, graduating in 1955. She taught at the University of California at Berkley, San Francisco State, San Jose State, and obtained her Masters Degree from the University of Utah. She then continued her education and obtained her Doctorate Degree from Colorado State University graduating in 1981. She married Stanley C. Winters on August 15, 1955 and from this union came three children: Ward D. Winters, Ruth, Nevada; Wendy W. Egbert, Logan, Utah; and S. Todd Susan Winters, Hyrum, Utah. They were later divorced. On Friday, July 13, 1984 she married George W. Preston, adding three more children to her family: Michael H. Shonagh Preston, Madras, Oregon; Stephen J. Heidi Preston, Pocatello, Idaho; and Peggy Preston, Queenstown, New Zealand. Jan was an active member of the LDS Church. She also was a member of the Soroptimist International, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and survived 4 ½ years thanks to cancer research from Huntsman Cancer Institute and her oncologists Drs. Morgan and Prystas of Salt Lake City, Utah. Jan is survived by her husband, George; her children; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She is also survived by 3 sisters: Mary Clark, Virginia Lester, and Neltje MacHale. Jan was a loving and caring mom, wife, and friend and will be missed by many, but always in our hearts. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan. Friends and family may call Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday morning from10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
