Our mother, Marion Jean Whitener Packer died on the 22 July 2009 at Sunshine Terrace of cause's incident to old age. She was born in Quincy, Washington on the 16 October 1922, the first of five children born to Carlyon Durand Whitener and Marion Carter Cameron Whitener. Our mother was a graduate of Kinman Business College in Spokane, Washington. She married Lieutenant Paul E. Packer, a B-29 pilot from Ogden, Utah on June 27, 1942. They had three children, Susan, Providence, Utah Brad Logan, Utah and Roy Lander, Wyoming. After the war, dad went to work for the U.S. Forest Service in Ogden, Utah. Our family also lived in Idaho and Montana during dad's tenure with the Forest Service. Our mother was a generous participant in the lives and activities of her children. She was a scout leader for all three of us. She was a DeMolay mom. And she was, many times, the Bethel Guardian for Bethel 12 in Logan of Job's Daughters International. She also served as the Grand Guardian of the State of Utah for Job's Daughters. The welfare of children was never far from her mind. She especially loved the Job's Daughters and believed in the leadership opportunities that this organization provides for young women. Our mother was active in the League of Women Voters and served as president. In 1994 she became a recipient of the "Women over 65 Achievement Award" given by the USU Women's Center to individuals who had made significant contributions for the advancement and quality of life for women. Mother was a Past Matron of Mizpah Chapter #6, Idaho City, Idaho, Order of the Eastern Star. She remained a very active member in the Masonic Family for most of her life and often said how proud she was concerning all of the wonderful things this Family does for children. Mom was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan where she was a Deacon and taught Sunday school for several years. Our mother is well known in the Logan Community as a kind and caring person. She was also very artistic and did painting and leather work during the early part of her life. She loved her piano and many kinds of music. When we were small she sang to us and played the piano for us. This developed a love of music in all three of us. Our mother loved us and we will always be thankful for the unselfish time she spent reading to us, talking to us and generally being there for us. Our mother has touched the lives of many people and especially, children. Her legacy will live on in the many young people for whom she helped to make a difference. She is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Earl Packer of 67 years in December 2008. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on the 28th of August at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 S. 200 West, Logan. Graveside services will be given for both of our parents at Leavitt's Cemetery in Ogden by Pastor Paul Heins, the American Legion, and the Masonic Order at 2:30 PM.
