Madeline Amy Likes Sortor, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Great-Great Grandmother passed away peacefully at the Logan Regional Hospital following a stroke. She was born on the 12th day of May 1932 to Clarence and Amy Likes in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was the baby of five children. After graduation from high school she and her sweetheart Darrell W. Sortor married and moved to Tacoma, Washington where Darrell was enlisted in the Army stationed at Fort Lewis. There they lived in a small one room apartment and began their family of eight, Cathy, Steve, Donald, Julie, Debbie, and Joy. They moved many times from Idaho, Utah, California, and back to Utah. Mom was employed by Lee's Family restaurant in Bountiful, Utah, and the Kitty Hawk Airport restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah for several years until her husband retired from trucking for health reasons, they sold their home and moved to Smithfield in 1972. She worked at the Juniper Inn where she learned to make the best pies, and rolls in the whole valley, she later worked for Pepperidge Farms, Holographic Products, and the Liquor Store in Richmond where she then retired.
She had a passion for bowling. In the 1980's she bowled a 289 and held the top of the leader board for several years at the Logan Lanes Bowling Alley. Crafting was another major passion she has had over the years that included crocheting, sewing, toll painting, and porcelain dolls. She also enjoyed traveling, fishing, and camping with her family.
In 2001, she lost her beloved husband of 51 years. As she moved on she became sick with the flu in the year of 2003, while in the hospital, she suffered a massive stoke that left her paralyzed on the right side of her body. She struggled with the effects of learning to speak again and becoming a lefty. She needed to leave her home in Smithfield and resided in the Heritage House in Preston, Idaho for eight years. It was a hard transition but she loved sitting by the window and watching the humming birds. One of her biggest pleasures was the visits of her children and grandkids. During her time in Preston multiple great-grandkids were born, and the look that she gave every time a baby was put in her lap was totally amazing. She has been called a Mom's Mom by a lot of watchers and she loved being hugged by the little ones and they were never afraid of her limitations. She recently moved in with her daughter Julie and Stan in Hyrum and has loved all the activity around her, which includes the Thursday night card games, and watch out for the shark behind the innocent look of an 80 year old. She was relentless when there was more than $2.00 on the table. We still don't know how she did it.
Madeline was preceded in death by her Father, Mother, two brothers, Elsie, and Bill, two sisters, Catherine, and Evelyn, Husband, son, Steve, grandsons, Matt, Aaron, and Jacob. She is survived by her children Cathy Brigham City, Don Debbie Logan, Julie Stan Hyrum, Debbie Kelly Preston, and Joy Allen Hyrum, with 21 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E 400 N, in Logan. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, October 7th and 10:30-11:30 am Monday, October 8th, prior to services at the same location. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at
