Luella Thompson Payne, 92, passed away quietly in her sleep on April 23, 2006, at Beacon Hospital and Rehab in Pocatello, Idaho. Luella was born on July 11, 1914 in Clarkston, Utah, the sixth child of Louis and Mary Buttars Thompson. She attended school in Clarkston where she graduated from the 10th grade as valedictorian, then graduated from North Cache High School. On June 2, 1932, she married Cecil G. Payne in Logan, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Living through the Depression and surviving the hardships of that era strengthened their marriage. She could always be seen working along side her husband and family on their farm in her long-sleeved white shirt to protect her form the sun and mosquitoes. Cecil died on April 15, 1981. Luella had a great love of music and nurtured that love in their family and in her many callings in the LDS church. She was the Trenton Ward choir director for 25 years, taught many young members in the ward to lead the music, and sang in a duet/quartet with friends. She served faithfully in many callings in the church. She also was employed by Cache County School District as a cook at Trenton Elementary and North Cache Jr. High schools for many years. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. Never a visit went by without a story from Grandma Lu-Pipsquek, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Old Ephraim, Bible stories and Little Two Eyes. She always had her recorder handy to record a grandchild singing or telling their own special story. She is survived by her three sons: Cecil N. Joyce, Cleston L., and Lynn G. Glenna Payne, all of Trenton; 12 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby Bingham of Weston, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one great-grandchild, Jeremy Payne; two brothers, Leroy and Ivan Thompson; and three sisters: Maude Goodsell, Pearl Griffin, and Gwen Winn. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the Trenton-Cornish Ward chapel, 1200 North 400 West, Trenton. Friends and family may call Wednesday evening, April 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Thursday morning at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Trenton Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at
