Louis Junior Gunnell

August 27, 1920 — April 14, 2011

Beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather, Louis Junior Gunnell, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011 in Logan, Utah. Louis was born in Logan, Utah on August 27, 1920 to Lewellyn Jeffs and Sarah Hawkins Gunnell. He spent his youth on the Gunnell farm in Bridge, Idaho where he learned sacrifice, devotion to family, hard work and faith in God. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his siblings and spent much time in the hay fields with his Father, Uncle Will, and Gunnell cousins. Louis met Edra Norman while attending Box Elder High School. They were married in the Logan Temple on April 16, 1941 and were able to spend 68 years together before her passing in 2008. Louis was drafted into WW II service in 1944. He served with Company "C" 89th Infantry. After an honorable discharge he returned to Idaho where he raised a dairy herd. He also worked for the Cassia County School District as a bus driver. Louis sold the farm in 1955 and moved his family to Providence, Utah. His love for farming did not die. He loved the land and animals always having had a loyal dog while on the farm. Louis worked for Prudential Insurance Company retiring in 1982. Later he worked for 25 years for the Cache County School District. Louis was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved to serve. He served on the High Council of the Raft River Stake from 1950-1955. He served as Finance Clerk in the Providence 4th ward under four Bishop's. After retirement he served with his wife Edra in the North Carolina Mission. After their return they served as officiators in the Logan Temple for nine years. Louis continued to work as a volunteer at the Temple until the age of 90. Louis was a High Priest in the Providence 4th ward. He served with humble and diligent perseverance as a faithful home teacher. He loved his Father in Heaven and set a wonderful example of service. He was always a gentleman and gracious to all. Louis is survived by his children Louis Jerald Lana, DeeAnne Ken Major, Janet Boyd Taylor, DelRay Rosalie, Doyle Paula, 23 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren. His sister, Luana Thompson, a sister-in-law, Beth Gunnell and a brother-in-law, William Parker. He was preceded in death by his wife Edra, his parents, one brother and four sisters, grandson Tyler Gunnell, and granddaughter Alania Gunnell. The family expresses their gratitude to his many friends and ward family for their visits and loving care. A viewing will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home in Logan, Utah, Sunday evening, April 17, 2011 from six to eight. Funeral services will be held at the Fruitland Acres Ward 465 North 300 East in Providence on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 11:30 with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:15. Burial will be in the Paradise, Utah Cemetery.
