Leo Dale Haws

L. Dale Haws, 81, died January 4, 2008 at Sunshine Terrace.
He was born December 31, 1926 to Jesse A. and Lena Eaton Haws in Vernal, Utah. He attended elementary school in Vernal and graduated from Uintah High School where he was football halfback, captain of the basketball team and student body president. He also played the piano, a bass horn and a C melody saxophone. All the men in his high school class were inducted into the army the day after graduation. He served in Europe during World War II and was called back into the military during the Korean War. Dale served an LDS mission in the North Central States, and attended BYU. He transferred to Utah State University, graduating in 1952. After military service in the Korean War he attended Iowa State University, receiving a masters degree. He completed a PhD in medical and veterinary entomology at Cornell University in 1958.
He married Colleen Munns of Garland September 15, 1950 in the Idaho Falls Temple.
He spent a large portion of his professional career overseas working primarily with food production programs in Afghanistan, India, Brazil, Egypt, Pakistan, the Philippines International Rice Research Institute and other Asian countries. He was a faculty member at University of Kentucky, University of Wyoming and University of Tennessee. During their 57-year marriage Dale and Colleen lived at 46 different addresses all over the world, the last being River Heights. He is survived by his wife and five children: Kirk D. Lynn Haws of Pella, Iowa; LaDawn Haws, Chico, CA; R. Brent Connie Haws, San Diego, CA; Julie Shaun Barker, Providence; Sandra Kim Ashworth, Nampa, ID; 15 grandchildren; three brothers: Jesse Varl LoraLee Haws, Pocatello, ID; John K. Beverly Haws, Afton, WY; and Max L. Shirley Haws, Morgan; and a sister-in-law, Gwen H. Haws, Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Carol, and a brother, B. Austin Haws. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home in Logan and Rogers and Taylor in Tremonton. A private family gathering will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday January 8 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, UT. Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m., and interment will be in the Garland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation.
