Kathryn Weeks Olsen

May 30, 1923 — December 29, 2005

SMITHFIELD, Utah ? Kathryn Weeks Olsen, 82, returned home to her Heavenly Father and regained her sight once again on Thursday, December 29, 2005. She passed away from causes due to old age at the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center in Logan. She was born May 30, 1923 to Asa David and Lillie P. Weeks of Smithfield, Utah. She was active in the 4-H Program and received her Golden Gleaner Award. She graduated from North Cache High School in 1941 as an honor student. Kathryn began her education at Utah State University in 1941, as apart of the largest freshman class ever to attend; however by the time she graduated, it was one of the smallest due to the outbreak of World War II. She graduated with honors in 1945 with a BA in home economics. She then taught Home Economics at American Fork High School for three years and South Cache High School for one year. During that year at South Cache, two of her students decided they needed to set her up with their uncle from Paradise, who had just returned from the war. It took some convincing, but she finally agreed to go out with Gideon E. Olsen and a few months later they announced their engagement. They were married on June 29, 1949 in the Logan LDS Temple. They are the parents of two daughters, and lived in Paradise until Gideon?s in 1953 when Kathryn moved back to Smithfield. Kathryn taught elementary school for 25 years in the Logan School District. She taught the second and fourth grades at the Ellis, Adams, and Wilson Elementary Schools. Due to her failing eyesight, it became necessary for her to retire early in 1981. She then attended the School for the Blind in Salt Lake City in 1982. For over 20 years she tied one quilt a week for the Deseret Industries, her family, and friends. That is over 1, 000 quilts! Kathryn is an active member of the LDS church. She has served as a teacher in the Mutual, Primary, Sunday School, as a Visiting Teacher and Single Representative. Kathryn also volunteered with Options for Independence. She lived in Smithfield until two years ago, surrounded by several siblings. She is survived by her siblings: Marian Dean Bischoff, David Veda Weeks, Marjorie Kay Scholes, Calvin Verena Weeks, and Carol Gaylord Leavitt. She is also survived by her daughters: Kathryn Wayne Boyer of Paradise, and Sylvia Kerry Kirkland of Logan. She is preceded in by her husband, Gideon E. Olsen of Paradise and her grandson, F. Christopher Boyer of Paradise. She loves her seven grandchildren and is proud of her five great-grandchildren. We love you Mom and Grandma!!! You are such an example to so many. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at the Smithfield 1st Ward Chapel, 175 South 100 West. Viewings will be held on Monday, January 2, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home 85 South Main, Smithfield and on Tuesday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Smithfield 1st Ward Chapel. Interment will be in the Paradise Cemetery. Condolences may be extended online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . We wish to especially thank her siblings, friends and neighbors for their kindness and care for so many years. We also wish to thank the compassionate staff at the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center for their dedicated service in Kathryn?s behalf.
