Kathleen Kay Griffiths Loosle

September 13, 1923 — July 12, 2002

Kathleen Kay Griffiths Loosle, 78, a humble and selfless woman, died peacefully of cancer on July 12, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on September 13, 1923 to Jesse William Griffiths and Bertha Loretta Olsen in Clarkston, Utah and was the third of eight children. At the age of five her family moved to a farm near Weston, Idaho. In her later years she spoke fondly of her upbringing in spite of the fact that they had no running water or electricity during the early years on the farm. She did very well in school, participating in school activities and graduating second in her class from Weston High School. After graduation, she enrolled at the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. Following the outbreak of World War II, there was a great demand for office workers at army camps and defense installations, so she left the Business College to work for the Army Air Forces as a secretary, first in Kearns, Utah, and then in Oakland, California. She married Byron Stratford Loosle on July 1, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived almost all of their married life in Smithfield where they raised five children: Judy Ann Dee Hicken, Salt Lake City; Susan Jeff Gyllenskog, Sandy; Jan Mark Simmons, Providence; Lyndon Annette, Smithfield; and Steven Linda, Salt Lake City. Twenty-four 24 grandchildren and twenty-two 22 great-grandchildren also survive her. Kathleen was an excellent seamstress. She loved reading, gardening, handiwork, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, long walks and her family. The care and well being of her family has always been her top priority. She possessed an extraordinary capacity for work and was constantly engaged in service to her church, community and family. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout her life and faithfully served in many different callings and positions. She appreciated the many good friends that she gained through her church activity. She is survived by three brothers and three sisters: Jesse Jr. Norma, Logan; Loretta Leon Taylor, Mesa, Arizona; Reed Faye, Weston, Idaho; Rhea Murray Godfrey, Soda Springs, Idaho; Michael Diane, North Ogden; Bonnie Gaylord Erickson, Boise, Idaho. Her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Elayne and Harvey Dewey, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 12:00 noon at the Smithfield 1st Ward, 175 South 100 West, Smithfield. Friends and family may call Tuesday, July 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Wednesday July 17 at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
