Judith Ann Nielsen Erickson

August 6, 1939 — May 11, 2008

Judith Ann Nielsen Erickson passed away quietly Sunday morning Mother's Day May 11, 2008 in the Salt Lake City, Intermountain Medical Center. This ended a ten- year long battle with cancer and complications following recent surgery. Judy was born August 6, 1939 in Logan, Utah. She grew up in Hyrum, attended The Lincoln Elementary School, and South Cache High School. She was a good student and participated in the Sparta Pep Club. She graduated from high school and the LDS seminary in 1957. During two summers following high school and after her first year of college, she worked as a cabin maid and later as a clerk in the curio shop at the North Rim Lodge at the Grand Canyon. It was here that she met Bill Glen W. Erickson, her future husband. After her second summer at the Grand Canyon, Bill went on an LDS mission and she went back to college. She liked art and some of her professors wanted her to major in art but she didn't see much future in that. After one year and a quarter at USU she transferred to the Weber State Nursing program where she obtained a two-year RN degree. Following graduation from nursing school she worked in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. Bill returned from his mission and they were married March 22, 1961 in the Logan LDS Temple. She worked at the Budge Clinic and later the LDS Hospital in Logan while Bill finished college at USU. Two daughters were born to them in Logan Mary Ann and Elaine. Following Bill's graduation she became an Air Force wife. Assignments took them to Texas, New York, South Dakota, California, Wyoming, and Florida. By the time they left the military they had three additional children John, Steven and Elizabeth. She lived in Blanding, Utah for the next 23 years, where Bill taught school. Two more children were born there Carolyn and Nathan. After Bill retired from teaching they moved to Logan for two years while they built their home in Preston, Idaho. A rather Sevier trial came to her following Bill's retirement. They were planning to go on a LDS mission when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of uterine cancer. The doctors offered her little hope, even with a massive operation and extensive chemo and radiation treatments. She decided to pursue alternative forms of treatment, special diet, food supplements, exercise, and a unique form of chemo treatments called IPT, administered by doctors in Atlanta Georgia. For the past ten years she has enjoyed generally good health. She has always faithfully fulfilled her duties in the Church. She liked working with the young women, especially the Camp Crafter Program in South Dakota. She has served as YW pres., RS pres., SS teacher and many other callings. While living in Logan she and her husband directed the tour guide services at the Logan Tabernacle. Since moving to Preston she has served as a worker in the Logan LDS Temple. The callings most important to her have always been simply wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband Glen W. Erickson, her seven children, twenty-four grandchildren with three on the way, and one great granddaughter with one on the way. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Mapleton Ward Chapel, 5307 East Cub River Road. Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery following funeral services. Services are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home, Logan.
