Joyce Whitehead Shumway

Joyce Whitehead Shumway, age 81 , passed away Wednesday, August 27th in Brigham City, UT, after a valiant battle with hydrocephalus . She was born June 9, 1933 in Franklin Idaho, the daughter of Abram Clifford Whitehead and Gwendolyn Grace Herd Whitehead. She attended elementary school in Franklin, Idaho and high school in Preston, Idaho. She loved growing up on a farm where her family was involved in many horse shows and rodeos. Her family spent a lot of time together in the canyon enjoying picnics and fishing. She was married and later divorced. She raised her four children in Franklin. She worked at the Franklin County Courthouse for the University of Idaho Extension Service. She married an elementary school friend, Perry E. Shumway, on March 16, 1973 in the Logan LDS Temple. They later took her four children to be sealed to them. She moved to Brigham City, Utah where she enjoyed being a full time mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She especially loved teaching the Gospel and working with the children as Primary President. She served four years as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple with her husband and enjoyed this calling very much. She supported her husband for many years in church leadership positions and was grateful for that opportunity. She worked on the Box Elder County library literacy program teaching adults, high school and junior high students reading skills. She loved to read and had read several hundred books. She loved flower and vegetable gardening and took great pride in making her yard so others would enjoy it. She enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans, blankets and other items for her children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends. She had a great love for music. She sang with her sister Gwen for many years and was a member of the Melodears singing group in Brigham City. She was the chorister in all auxiliaries of the Church and loved teaching the gospel through music. Joyce loved her family very much. Her family brought much joy into her life and each one touched her life in some special way. She was proud of them and all that they accomplished. Her one wish was that they would stay close to their Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was especially grateful for Perry and the love and care he gave her since her health deteriorated. He was always there for her and trying to meet her needs. She suffered with chronic pain for 28 years and in later years from hydrocephalus. She always looked to her Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, for comfort and strength to go on each day. She always tried to look her best and smile and not let people know how she really felt. She loved living in Brigham City and was very grateful for her many good friends and neighbors. She and her family are very grateful to HSNU Hospice staff for their kind and loving care during her final days. She is survived by her husband, Perry E. Shumway, five children; Terri Jim Burton, Scott Janis Buttars, Kathy Alan Parrish, Vicki Johnson, and Scott Jill Shumway, 27 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren and one sister, Shirley Frayne Hobbs. She was preceded in death by a step daughter, Dixie, her sisters Gwen Clain Baird, Marilyn Robert Einzinger, Grace Alton Long, and two grandchildren, Bryon Scott Buttars and Shellece Burton. A viewing will be Friday, August 29th, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, August 30th, at 11:00, with a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30; both at 650 Anderson Drive in Brigham City. Internment will be at the Franklin Idaho cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
