John Christian Schmidt II

February 11, 1923 — December 24, 2005

John Christian Schmidt II died peacefully on Christmas Eve afternoon at Logan Regional Hospital LRH, UT, holding the hands of his loving wife and son. John was born in West New York, NJ, on February 11, 1923, and served in World War II in the Army Air Corps 1942-1945; he rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He married Jean Muriel McDonnell on October 25, 1947, and they had one son, John Jack Christian Schmidt III, of North Logan, UT. John worked as a business machine repairman for IBM for 34 years, and he and Jean retired from New Jersey to Seven Lakes/West End, NC, where they lived for 13 years. Jean and John moved to Pioneer Valley Lodge, North Logan, UT, in September 2005 to be near their son. John was universally known as a uniquely kind, generous, and humble man. He served on the Boards of Trustees of Trinity Methodist Church, Rahway, NJ, and Union Village Methodist Church, Berkeley Heights, NJ, and was a Deacon of West End Presbyterian Church, NC. He was also a diligent volunteer for New Providence Presbyterian Church, NJ. Throughout his years of active retirement in NC, he was a volunteer for Moore Regional Hospital and the Coalition for Human Care. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Schmidt Henning, also of Seven Lakes/West End. A memorial service is being planned for late winter 2006 at West End Presbyterian Church. A remembrance gathering will be held at the home of his son at 1350 East 1700 North, North Logan, on January 4 at 2p. The family especially thanks all of John?s recent caregivers-- medical doctors, staff, and nurses, especially Drs. T. S. Cunningham and V. Garg, and the LRH dialysis, medical, emergency, and ICU units -- and Rev. David Hedgepeth of First Presbyterian Church, Logan.
