John Loosle Heggie

October 12, 1909 — July 21, 2002

Clarkston, Utah ? John L. Heggie, 92, passed away July 21, 2002. He died peacefully at his Providence home from causes incident to age. He was born October 12, 1909, in Clarkston, Utah, the son of Andrew Stewart and Mary Loosle Heggie. He was the seventh child in a family of six sisters and one brother. He married Verda Marie Jenson in the Logan Temple on January 23, 1947. A dry farmer by vocation, he owned and operated their acreage with his father and brother, Andrew, in the production of wheat and alfalfa. His formal education included North Cache high School and Utah State University where he received a BS degree in Industrial Arts, School of Engineering. Later in life, he contributed to the Agriculture Field of Learning at USU. He was active in the LDS Church, having served as Ward Clerk and Bishop of the Clarkston Ward. He always enjoyed music and was a member of the ward choir for many years. As a young man, he fulfilled an LDS mission to the Eastern States. In later years, with his wife, he served an 18-month LDS mission to the Philippines. In the Smithfield Stake he was a member of the High Council, Stake Clerk and 2nd Counselor in the Smithfield Stake Presidency. When the Smithfield Stake was divided, he was sustained and set apart as Stake Patriarch in the new Benson Stake. He was a generous contributor in deed and service, wherever he was called to serve. He was especially supportive of the Boy Scout program. He and his wife participated in the Indian Placement program, having two Navajo young girls live with them, one in 1958-59 and one in 1963-64. Together with his wife, he participated in the Martin Harris Pageant. They also served together in the Logan Temple where he was an officiator. He is survived by his wife, Verda, and daughter, Helen Heggie Winings of Providence, Utah; four grandchildren, Emily Warren Spencer, John, James and Jared Winings and one sister, Sarah L. Heggie. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 27, 2002 in the Clarkston Ward Chapel, 25 East 100 South. Family and friends may call on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Clarkston City Cemetery. Condolences to the family may be extended online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
