River Heights ? John Davis Fairing, 83, died on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on December 6, 1918 to Harriet Davis and Robert Paterson Fairing in Newark, New Jersey. He served in the Army Air Corps in England during World War II and graduated Cum Laudi from Princeton University Class of ?43. On March 1, 1947, he married Elizabeth Betsey Anne Booher of Dayton, Ohio. John worked for Beechnut Company in Canajoharie, New York as a chemist for the food labs. In 1951, John moved to Dayton, Ohio to work for Monsanto Corporation as a chemist. In 1961, Monsanto transferred him to St. Louis, Missouri, where he continued work as a chemist. John eventually tranferred to the Microscopy Department where he worked on scanning and transmission microscopes as a Senior Research Scientist until his retirement in 1984. In the early 1970?s, John assisted in the formation of the non-profit corporation Scanning Microscopy, International. John served as CEO, editor, and reviewer until 1994. After retirement from Monsanto, John worked as a consultant for Tracor-Northern Corporation, where he received a patent for his development of the Confocal Microscope. In 1997, John and Betsey moved to River Heights to be near their daughter. John was a 32nd degree Mason. He loved to learn and was always exploring new avenues of knowledge. He loved to share his knowledge. He gave many Lectures to school children concerning science and microscopes. He was invited by Universities throughout Japan, England, and Wales to lecture to students and professionals. He has received numerous US and Canadian patents throughout his career. He enjoyed photography, reading, travel and spending time with his family. John was preceded in death by his Mother 1918 and his Father 1948. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, son Robert Clarke Beverly Fairing, Camby, Oregon; daughter Laurel M. Kevin McGill, River Heights, Utah; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. T. Scott Cunningham and Logan Nursing Center for their great care of John during his extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.
