Jodene Ricks Balls

November 4, 1957 — April 23, 2014

On April 23, 2014 Jodene Ricks Balls completed her earthly mission and was called home. Known for being a devoted, thoughtful, and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend it's no wonder she earned her angel wings so quickly. Jo was born in Logan, Utah on November 4, 1957 to Darrell and Betty Ricks, the second of four children. She enjoyed a childhood full of animals, horse-riding, and antics with her siblings and friends. Jo also loved spending time with her favorite grandparents, Woodrow and Francis Brown. As a young woman, Jodene earned the titles of Golden Spike Rodeo Queen in 1976 and Cache County Rodeo Queen in 1977 and would take your breath away during her presentation ride. Jodene married the love of her life, Craig Balls in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 14, 1978 they just celebrated their 36th anniversary. A few years later, he built her a home in River Heights where they raised their three girls. While Jodene's many achievements and qualities are too numerous to mention, it is notable that she had special relationships with and was adored by her daughters and was a favorite primary teacher for many children year after year. She was a dependable employee, working for IHC for over 37 years where she enjoyed time with a few dear friends. Jo was a thoughtful friend always remembering everyone's birthdays and anniversaries and she really put effort into making things special for those she loved; her cards and gifts reflected her thoughtful, creative nature. She was a true friend and a fantastic grandmother. Jodene really enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, traveling, and antiquing. Jo loved and is loved by many. Her love and influence will be missed. Jodene is survived by her husband, Craig River Heights; daughters Jami and Jonathan Van Huss Wellsville, Lexi and Ben Cowley New Orleans, LA, and Kaitlin Balls River Heights; grandchildren, Anna, Aubree, and Autumn Van Huss and Truxton and Jocelyn Cowley; parents, Darrell and Betty Ricks Benson; siblings Jeff and Vickie Ricks Benson, Jay and Cathy Ricks Benson, and Jennifer and Rick Woodford Afton, WY; sister-in-law Marilyn Briggs Pleasant View; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of Jodene's life will be Monday, April 28, 2014 at noon at the River Heights Third Ward Church, 465 North 300 East, Providence, under the direction of Bishop Ron Zollinger. Viewings will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, April 27 at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North in Logan and on Monday, April 28 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the church. Interment will be at the Millville City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donate to your favorite charity in Jodene's name. Even after Jo was diagnosed with brain cancer, she was pleasant and loving. A special thanks for the prayers, help, and support of caregivers, family, and friends over the last six months. Condolences may be shared with family at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
