James Jim O. Morris
Newton, Utah – Jim Morris 74, died Tuesday May 21, 2013, at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden due to medical complications. Jim was born June 17, 1938 in Martinsville, VA the only son of James O. Morris Sr. and Kathleen Lovelace Dawson. Jim married the love of his life, Mary Price Winfrey in Alexandria, VA on August 5, 1960. They had 52 years together. Together Jim and Mary had two daughters and one son, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Jim grew up in Martinsville VA with his sister Anne. After graduating from high school he crossed the county to work at Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. This was the beginning of his love affair with the Rocky Mountain West. After the summer employment in Yellowstone ended, he then hitchhiked to ID, OR, CA, NV, UT, CO, NM and TX. Jim then joined the Air Force and served four years. He was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Denver, CO, Pittsburgh, PA and Kadena, Okinawa. The Air Force enabled him to see a large part of this country including Hawaii and the Far East. After Jim and Mary were married they lived in Denver, CO, then moved back to Martinsville for eleven years. In 1973, his longing to live in the Rocky Mountains won out, and he with his family moved to Cache Valley settling in Newton for the past 39 years. He worked in several positions after moving to Utah, his last being at Utah State University working for Technical Services for 15 years. After his retirement in 1999, he was able to enjoy his greatest passion, which was landscaping, gardening, hiking and being in nature. Jim's favorite place to be; was in a cabin in the Jackson Hole/Teton area. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Mary Jo and granddaughter Sabrina Kae Kelsey. Jim is survived by his wife; three children, Karen Spackman of Newton, Utah, Stephen of McKinney, Texas, Lance Kay Kelsey of Millville, Utah; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister Anne J.R Zepkin, Williamsburg, VA and sister-in-law Margaret Harold Hart, Ashburn, VA.
A viewing will be held from 10:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. Friday May 24th at Nelson Funeral Home located at 162 East 400 North, Logan, Utah prior to funeral services at noon at the same location. Interment will be in the Newton Cemetery.
Dad was a special and gifted man that taught us to see the beauty of nature around us. You are loved and will be missed by us all.
