SMITHFIELD ? Jewel Conniel Smith, 86 of Smithfield, passed away November 30, 2002 at his home following a valiant fight with cancer. He was born in Smithfield, Utah January 6, 1916 to Manfred and Mary Ann Owen Smith. He attended schools in Smithfield. Jewel married Ruth Spongberg, in the Logan Temple on November 24, 1939. The couple resided in Smithfield their entire life. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Seventeenth Quorum of Seventies, as a home teacher and in many ward callings. He served with his wife as officiators in the Logan Temple and was there for 20 years. Throughout his life he was a hard worker as a farmer, sheepherder, and for the Utah State Road Department for 29 years, where he was foreman in the Logan Canyon for many of them. Many people thanked him for helping them get through the canyon during the winter months. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He kept a few sheep to keep him busy through his retired years. He was known for his generosity in sharing vegetables from his garden with family and friends. He enjoyed displaying his produce and animals at the fair and winning blue ribbons. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving is his loving wife, Ruth of 63 years. They were blessed with 3 children: Connie Floyd Etherton, Ruth Ann Winston Watts and Julie Glen Kraus. They have 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Leatha Curtis, and preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers, 3 sisters and a grandchild, Shawn Watts. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 12 noon in the Smithfield LDS 16th Ward Chapel, 625 East 600 South, with Bishop Dan Lindhardt conducting. Family and friends may call at the Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday at the Church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Primary Children?s Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.
