Jeffery Scott Whiting

September 29, 1960 — November 9, 2008

Jeffery Scott Whiting, 48, of Stansbury Park, Utah departed this life on Sunday, November 9, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jeffery was born on September 29, 1960 at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas to Bonnie Jean McKnight Whiting and John Heber Whiting. Jeff's time on earth was spent in love and kindness. Everyone he met was his friend. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He fit in every crowd from two to ninety-two. He served an LDS mission in Iowa where he learned to love the Gospel, the people and PORK. When Jeff returned from his mission, he decided to become a chef. He attended cooking school and did an apprenticeship at the famous Mariposa Restaurant at Deer Valley. He became ill and was diagnosed with his first cancer. The radiation treatment weakened his body and the smell of food became unbearable. He had to give up his first dream. He was cured from that cancer. Jeff still loved to cook and he made the world a special place for his family and friends by having lots of wonderful parties with wonderful food. Jeff served in many LDS church callings, especially with the youth and scouts. The boys all loved to camp because Jeff did the cooking. He graduated from Utah State University, where he cooked part time to put himself through school, and then moved back to Dugway. He began his employment at Dugway as a Life Guard and worked his way up to Manager of Outdoor Recreation. Jeff never complained. Things were always FINE when anyone asked. He spent his last days in the kitchen telling his mother how to fry bacon and make a new dessert. Jeff loved music! all kinds – all times. He learned to hunt, fish and camp with his dad and brothers. He was a swimmer, skier and loved to river run and snowmobile. Jeffery is survived by his parents, Bonnie and John Heb Whiting, Logan, Utah; sister, Jan and her husband, Dennis Roberts, Draper, Utah; two brothers, John H. Whiting, Jr., Pocatello, Idaho; and Edward G. Whiting, Providence, Utah; and a close friend of the family, Sherry Lindberg, Salt Lake City, Utah. He will be missed by Nanuk, his beautiful Samoyed dog, who was his partner for 17 years. He will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Stansbury Park Stake Center/Benson Mill Ward, 417 East Benson Road, Stansbury Park, Utah. Friends and family may call Thursday evening at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will take place Friday in the Smithfield City Cemetery, Smithfield, Utah at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . Jeff expresses heartfelt thanks to Dr. LeGrand Belnap whom Jeff referred to as his madman surgeon! who saved him twice; Dr. Jonathan Whisenant, his cancer specialist; Dr. Jane MacPherson and Dr. Gary Garner, his Hospice specialists; and to Cori and the VistaCare Hospice Team. You earned his deepest respect and with Jeff, that truly is a compliment.
