Janet Dee Winget Thurston, 60, passed away peacefully at home Monday October 4, 2004 after a heroic battle with cancer. Janet was born March 4, 1944 in Logan, the daughter of J Alan and Loa Winget. Janet married Thomas Frank Thurston, of Hyde Park, Utah, on April 19, 1963 in the Logan LDS Temple. Janet enjoyed reading, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and collecting teddy bears. Janet was Toms' favorite honey bear. The two old bears enjoyed their empty nest together and look forward to reuniting their love in the hereafter. Janet had a strong desire to live and to see that her friends and family were taken care of. Her will to live was evident by the numerous physical Illnesses she overcame throughout her life. Janet was born paralyzed, her blood turned to water causing a brain hemorrhage at just a few days old, she experienced rheumatic fever during childhood, breast cancer plagued her at the young age of 33, six months after giving birth to her fifth child, and threatening her life. "I have five children to raise, I'm not going anywhere," Janet told doctors. Uterine cancer followed twenty years later and finally a heroic battle against abdominal tumors began in April 2004. Family and friends are full of gratitude for the gift of her life and the time they were granted to spend with her. Janet will be missed. Janet was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in various positions including primary teacher, compassionate service and librarian. Janet loved to serve others and has made a significant difference in the lives of many. Janet is survived by her husband, Thomas of Smithfield, three sons and two daughters. Farrell Nellie Thurston of New Mexico, Todd Charla Thurston of Georgia, Carol Dan Egan of Smithfield, Deena Heath Nielsen of Texas and Shannon Rayan Thurston of Logan; 16 grandchildren; and by two brothers, Glen Judy Winget of Centerville, Jeff Amy Winget of Missouri. Janet was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday October 8, 2004 in the Smithfield North Stake Center, 155 West 400 North. A viewing will be held from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main in Smithfield and from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Stake Center.
