James Owen Yeates

J. Owen Yeates passed away Thursday, February 24 at Logan Regional Hospital following a short illness. He was born May 25, 1928 in Logan, Utah to R. Owen Yeates and Evalyn Monson Yeates. Owen grew up In the Logan 3rd Ward area, attending Ellis Elementary School and graduating from Logan High School in 1946.
Owen served a LDS mission in Southern California from 1947-1949. After his mission he attended Utah State University where he met and married his eternal sweetheart, IvaLoo Petersen, in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they graduated from Utah State University in 1953. Owen served as a lieutenant in the U.S. army from 1953 to 1955, moving his family to Fort Lee, VA. After returning to Logan for a short time, he accepted a job with Tidewater Oil Company in California until 1963. Owen went into business with his father, bringing in the Northern Utah Mobil Oil Distributorship. He owned and operated Yeates Oil Company until 1980. Many family members and relatives found employment there. Owen was a member of the Cache County Commission from 1980 to 1988. He, along with other close associates, established North Park Bank of Commerce in North Logan and Bear Lake.
In 1990 Owen and IvaLoo returned to Southern CA where he established Capstone Securities and was still currently working. While in Victorville, Owen faithfully served as Bishop of the Silver Lakes Ward. He loved this calling as was referred to as ?The Smiling Bishop.? Bishop Yeates loved his ward members and they loved him.
Owen purchased a home in North Logan in 2007 for he and his wife to be nearer to family. He continued to work between North Logan and California.
Owen was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many hours with his brothers, sons and grandsons on the Hebgen Reservoir in Montana. The fish may now rest easier. Owen was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clayne M. Yeates and a sister Carole Richman Maddux. He leaves behind a posterity that loves him dearly and will miss him. Owen is survived by his wife of 58 years; children: Paula Jurinak Jeff, Houston TX; Laurie Baldwin Robert, Wellsville, UT; Cory Darla, Logan, UT; Angela Cunningham Gary, North Logan, UT; Tony Terri, Moorepark, CA; Spence Annette, South Jordan, UT and Sam Deb, Naperville IL. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Brothers and a sister, Lynn Yeates, Riverton, UT; Dennis Yeates, Centerville, UT and Sheryl Spriet, Smithfield, UT.
Graveside Services will be held Tuesday March 1st at 12:00 noon, Logan City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Owen requested donations be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints? Perpetual Education Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
