James J White

August 18, 1926 — May 15, 2008

GARLAND, UT – James J. White, 81, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008 at home. He was born August 18, 1926, in Collinston to Jacob Jeremiah and Julia Ellen "Nellie" Potts White, the last of 12 children.
Jim missed his graduation ceremony at Bear River High School because he was drafted in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Lexington during World War II. Upon completing his military service, he served an LDS mission to California and Arizona. Jim married Zenna Archibald May 20, 1949, in the Logan LDS Temple. He was a third generation blacksmith and made a living at his blacksmith shop in Garland. He also worked at the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company during the annual campaign. He was active in the community and civil service. Among many committees and positions, he served two terms in the Utah State House of Representatives and 12 years as a Box Elder County Commissioner.
In addition to a love of sports, Jim said his hobby was his service in the church. He and Zenna served missions to Manchester, New Hampshire and the Nauvoo, Ill. Temple. Jim held many leadership positions in the church, including bishop, stake president and was presently serving as Garland Stake Patriarch and a sealer in the Logan Temple.
Surviving are his wife, Zenna; three daughters: Linda Alan James, Tremonton, Jeanine Mark Richards, Riverside, Yvette Dale Sampson, Colorado Springs, CO; one son, James Tamara White, Preston, ID; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Dorothy Jensen and Lola Guyon.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Aileen Simmons, Olive Durfrey, Thomas White, Idella White, Dallas White, June Pinder, Ray White, Alf White and Beth Hansen. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Garland Tabernacle, 140 West Factory, Garland. Friends may visit the family from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008 and Monday from 9:15–10:30 a.m. at the Garland Tabernacle. Interment will be at the Garland Cemetery.
The family suggests donations be made to the perpetual education fund of the LDS Church.
