James Allen Hoffmann

James Allen Hoffmann passed away Thursday, February 26, 2004. Jim was born in Breese, Illinois on December 18, 1928 to Harrison W. Hoffmann and Byrdie Ann Cross, both deceased. He attended grade school, high school and college in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his B.S. Degree in Forest Management from Utah State University, Logan, and his Ph.D. Degree in Plant Pathology from Washington State University, Pullman. He was employed by USDA/ARS as a Research Plant Pathologist at WSU and USU for 28 years and was internationally recognized as an authority on the bunt diseases of cereals and wild grasses. He retired to Kauai, Hawaii in 1986 and returned to live in Logan, Utah in 1998. Jim married Phyllis A. Lambert of St. Louis; they have three children: Allen B. Hoffmann of Smithfield, Utah; Jennifer L. Hoffmann of Logan, Utah; and Hillary A. Howard of Ames, Iowa; and two grandchildren: Allison Palmer of Cypress, California, and Dianna Howard of Ames, Iowa. Jim and Phyllis divorced and Jim later married Sharon L. Smock of Cortland, Ohio. They also divorced. Jim leaves behind a sister, June Musterman of St. Louis, Missouri. Jim?s brother, Harrison A. Hoffmann, died previously. He also leaves behind many friends and his cat, Lilith. In accordance with Jim?s wishes, there will be no funeral. A memorial wake will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Four Paws Animal Rescue, the Cache Valley Humane Society or CAPSA.
